Mr. and Mrs. Howard Lockwood spent the Memorial holidays in the home of their daughter, Mrs. Dallas Davis, and family formerly pf Lake In The Hills but now of St. Charles, Mo., and also did 1 -ne sightseeing while tt.;j ... Their grandson, Dall Davis, returned home with them for a week's visit. * Mr. and Mrs. Stephen N. Schmitt of St. Petersburg, Fla. have returned to McHenry for the summer and are occupying the former Peter Fretthomeon Court street recently purchased by Clarence Young. Mrs. Ceil Chamberlain and daughter, Mrs. Edward Yockey of Milwaukee were guests of Miss Clara Miller Tuesday of last week. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bienapfl, accompanied by friends, returned Sunday from a sight-seeing trip through Illinois, Missouri, Ohio, Michigan and Indiana. In Battle Creek, Mich., they called on the Clayton Nelsons, former McCullom Lake residents. Mrs. Edla AntonsSn and Mrs. Martha Emmerson have returned from a ten days visit in the home of the tatter's sister in Rolla, Mo. The Thomas Lawson family has returned from a week's visit with relatives in Mauston, Wis. Dean Achor, son of the Paul Achors of Culler, Inc., who is in^training in Great Lakes, accompanied by jx buddy, was a guest of his grandmother, Mrs. Helen Heuser, on Memorial day. Dinner guests in the George H. Johnson home Saturday evening ' to help celebrate their fifty - fourth wedding anniversary which fell on Monday were Mr. and Mrs. George E. Johnson and Mrs. O.G. Ederof Evanston Mrs. George Reichow of Chicago, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Johnson and Miss Maud Granger. Miss Louis Arvidsen of Los Angeles' and Mrs. John Watson and a friend of Elgin were callers in the George H. Johnson home Monday. Mrs. Howard Smith ofChambersburg, Pa., is visiting her cousin, Mrs. Clyde Blackwell, 1319 N. Meadow iane. \ HIGfl WAY PROJECTS Contracts totaling more than $5,000,000 for projects on the state's 1968 road program were awarded last week for projects in McLearr, Moultrie, Cumberland, Rock Island, St. Clair, Clark and Jefferson counties. McHENRY GIRL IS GRADUATE OF MAC MURRAY Chrysande J. Levesque, the* daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Josr eph R. Levesque, 3011 North Spring road, McHenry, was awarded the Bachelor of Arts degree in French from Mac- Murray college at its 117th commencement on Sunday, June 2. Two hundred-three students were candidates for the Bachelor of Arts degree, including 101 from the 122-year-old college for Women and 102 from the College for Men, iounded in 1955. , 3. Dr. William C. Or'r, associate provost at the University of Connecticut was the commencement speaker. He was awarded an honorary doctor's degree. The formal commencement ceremonies Sunday climaxed a weekend of activities which involved seniors, parents, alumni and friends of the liberal arts college. SHOP McHENRY Wice FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 7, 1928) Mrs. Samantha Rorer Buttons of McHenry, nearly 98 years old, is the last of the Civil War Mothers now drawing a pension from the United States government, although the war ended sixty-three years ago. Her son, Private Clinton D. Rorer of Co. H. Eighth Illinois Cavalry, enlisted when he was 16 years old in February, 1864, and about four months later died of typhoid fever in a hospital . at Camp Relief at Washington, D.C. Mrs. Button may be called McHenry's oldest pioneer settler, having lived here for 94 years. The members of the eighth grade with their teachers enjoyed a party at the grade school gymnasium. The feature of the evening was a Maypole dance with streamers used in the class colors. Miss Marion Chapell of Evanston was united in marriage to Mr. Paul Newman of New York City, June 2. The ceremony took place at the home of the bride's sister, Mrs. William H. Severin, with Rev. Bennett officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Thompson and Miss Maud Granger of this city attended the wedding. Mrs. John M. Phalin and daughter, Eleanor, spent the weekend at Notre Dame, Inc., where they attended the commencement exercises of the graduation class of "Notre Dame of which Howard Phalin, was a member. The senior class composed of 390 graduates presented a beautiful large flag to the college. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Nickels are now occupying the house on Main street recently vacated hy George Buss. TWENTY - FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 10, 1943) The graduating class this year consists of fifty-five senators, seven of these are honor. students. Charles R. Peterson received his silver wings May 24 in Texas as the A.A.F. Gulf Coast Training center's ten advanced flying schools awarded silver flying wings to its fifth 1943 class of graduating flyers. Jack Weber, nine year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Weber, barely escaped serious injury when he fell from a box- -car near the Northwestern depot. Jack and a companion had gone to the store when they saw several of their playjnates on top of a box car on one of the side tracks aind joined them in play. Rain earlier in the day had made the car slippery and when Jack attempted to climb he fell cutting deep gashes in his head. Miss Genevieve. Knox of the public grade school faculty has recently accepted a position with the Red Cross in Chicago. The training which Miss Knox will receive will be of definite value to her in the future. Mary Jane Laures graduated from St. Joseph's school of Nursing at Elgin, June 6. Staff Sgt. Robert Vanderstraten of Wonder Lake is reported missing. He was a bombardier on one of Uncle Sam's flying fortresses in the London area. The surgical dressing classes are now meeting in the [ home-making room at the high' school. Sister M.
