The 1968 McHenry County Fair nears, a time when more than 1,300 boys and girls will use this colorful event as a 4-H Showcase for their projects, their talents - their hopes and fears go on the line against others equally talented, equally hard-working. However, judging by response to the horse and pony 4-H projects, it is apparent many people who live in the small towns and cities--or on U Dairy Promotion Is Acquiring New Dimension Dairy pro motion at the* McHenry County Fair acquires an added dimension this year. Helping Mary Rath, our new . McHenry County Dairy Princess, will be Phyllis Stremming, reigning Illinois Dairy Princess. Mary won her crown at the Dairy Promotion Council contest in late June. Phyllis is nearing the end of her reign. She'll be here Friday afternoon and evening, Aug. 2 to join in fair-time promotion. The milk punch mixing session will be conducted at the fair several times. Milk will be distributed throughout the fair, and of course the 4-H booth in Massey Hall undoubtedly will feature milk! Mary has been making appearances since her crowning. Her sponsor at the local contest was the Federal Land Bank Association. She'll also vie in the state ADA of Illinois contest in August. Runnerup was Mary Ann Stilling. The 4-H horse and pony show at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1 is open to 4-H club members in McHenry county who keep "feed records on their horse projects. The show starts with three halter classes. Each horse project is judged individually on conditio'h, grooming and cleanliness. Mrs. Norma Luedtke is superintendent and LeRoy Eddy is ringmaster. J u n i o r a n d s e n i o r showmanship competition follows the halter class judging. The judging is based on how each child handles his horse or pony. Showmanship has five classes. Eight performance classes will concluae the big day. They include speed and action, pleasure pony, handy horse or pony, junior rider, pleasure horse, package race, senior rider pleasure, barrel race and trail class. •»The package race should provide added interest since riders ride to the end of the arena, open a package, put on the apparel and lead their horse back to the finish line! Fair Visitors Will Salute State's Birthday At the McHenry County Fair, the 35,000 visitors will gee many signs saluting Illinois on its 150th birthday! In this Sesquicentennial year, the fair is sponsoring the official Illinois Sesquicentennial play at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4 - final day of the fair. The grandstand is free at the fair this year so the only cost is the gate admission of $1, andof course a great many people purchase season passes. The play takes the audience from the Revolutionary War to the United Nations and ends with ac challenge that today's problems have created another wilderness confronting society. Title of this production by the Repertory Theatre company from Illinois State Normal University is "Make Her Wilderness Like Eden." - The play is cleverly staged; with costumes, props, slides,. IN-ACTION PARTICIPATION is one important facet of 4-H. Pedersen, rear center, was the 1967 winner. This shows participants in the sheep blocking contest. Connie music, familiar ballads and dancing. It capsulizes events and personalities from 150 years of the Prairie State's history. Moments of keen suspense and haunting tragedy are in this presentation - sure to be one of the big events at this 20th McHenry County Fair The passage of the 1920s roars in like a tidal wave. Flagpole sitting and dance marathons are moved aside with World - War II and dedication to victory. This is "Children's Day" when prices on rides at the carnival are reduced. Don Hansen, Fair Association ^president, issues a speftial invitation for children (of all ages) to come to the fair anytime August 1-4--and especially on "Children's Day." Good rides, well-maintained and neatly kept, are a "must" at the McHenry County nair. Board members insist on it. "Beauties of Illinois" in a salute to the Sesquicentennial theme of this year's fair. Altogether, the 35 presidents of the United States have had 122 children (72 sons and 50 daughters). The- winner of the Miss Congeniality title will be determined by a vote of the contestants themselves. The candidates will appear on the WREX-TV this Friday at 12:05 p.m. to talk about the upcoming McHenry County Fair. The fair is Aug. 1-4 and the Miss McHenry County pageant will be held on opening night. A special invitation has been sent Judi Ford, newly-chosen Miss Illinois, to attend the finals here. Judi served as a judge at the preliminaries on July 10. Her mother, will replace her on the judge's panel. Judi, Belvidere blonde beauty, is preparing for the Miss America contest this fall. Mrs. Dorothy Kleckner is chairman of the Miss McHenry County pageant and is developing the theme, Four Categories Will Comprise Fair Olympics Dashes, the McHenry county mile run, intertown relays and Little League baseball team relays: Those four main categories comprise the 1968 McHenry County Fair Junior Olympics on Saturday, Aug. 3. Races start at 10 a.m. and are open to McHenry county residents only. Bob Thompson is chairman, and he says contestants must file an entry blank (at the fair office on the fairgrounds by Thursday evening. The office is open now. Contestants report to the fairgrounds, by the grandstand, by 9:45 a.m. on Saturday. Intertown relay race is 880 yards with each member running 220 yards. The Little League relay will be a shuttle type race over 300 yards. Each boy will cover 75 yards. In dashes, races are by age groups - for both boys and girls. An open class 440-yard dash is an added a t t r a c t i o n for boys, and one of the highlights of the Olympics is the mile run. Interview Show Details Are Told . Ralph Ostrander will be broadcasting from the McHenry County Fair for the 20th year. Ostrander will handle an interview show direct from the fairgrounds on Thursday and Friday of the Fair, Aug. 1-2, for WKRS, Waukegan, 1220 on the radio dail. Ostrander recalled that he has interviewed over 1,300 people on the radio from the fair. He will broadcast live from the fairgrounds at 1:15 p.m.; 2:45 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Ralph will conduct his freckle contests for the tenth year!
