Our horses, along with other f a r m e r ' s h o r s e s , about four teams, were hitched to a sort of t r e a d m i l l and walked around and around all day to run the threshing machine. The grain was put into large bags and hauled to the grainery where it was stored for future use, for livestock and also for wheat for us. It was also ground into floor. We children d e l i g h t e d to ride back and forth in the wagons. After the threshing was done, we would run barefoot through the deep groove of soft earth made by le horse hooves in the "racetrack." Farmers kept the engine crew overnight if the the threshing wasn't done, or if the weather was rainy, meaning more work for the housewife. Threshing time was a hardwork time, but it was certainly a "fun" time for all concerned.
