Moler of Charles Town, West Virginia (standing). (Molei* was president of Kiwanis during the time that the proclamation was being sought* He was succeeded as president of Kiwanis International by Harold M. Hcimkaugh, Los Angeles, California, on August 1.) The resolution was sponsored by 39 members of Congress and signed by President Johnson. Major sponsors included two past governors of Kiwanis (left to right) Senator John J. Sparkman of Alabama and Senator Karl E, Mundt of South^ Dakota, and Representative Harley O. Staggers of West Virginia. FAMILY Reunion Day is co-sponsored by Kiwanis International and the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge in an effort to promote family togetherness. Families across the nation are being urged to set aside Sunday, August 11 for family^reunions. "A PROCLAMATION Since the founding of the Republic, the American family has been a source of individual strength and national stability* These are times* however, that test the unity of family life. Progress -- social, economic, and technological -- has brought with It new mobility that tends to separate the members of affluent families. For millions of other Americans, poverty, discrimination and the spiritual deprivation of slum life have strained the cohesion of family units past the breaking point. Many young people are growing up without the shaping example of a firm, responsible and caring male in the household. There are strengths within almost all families, whether or not headed by a father; but history and instinct tell us that a society that does not encourage responsible fatherhood will pay for its failure in later generations. For that reason, action to extend job opportunities to improve education and housing, and to end discrimination in all its forms is vital to stronger family life -- and ultimately, to a more just and peaceful nation. Now, therefore, I, Lyndon B. Johnson, President of the United States of America, pursuant to Senate Joint, Resolution 165, do hereby designate Sunday, Aug. 11, 1968, as Family Reunion Day, and I urge all the people of the United States to support those actions that will strengthen the American family, and to celebrate this day with such ceremonies as will reemphasize our continuing belief that family life is the highest and most enduring product of our civilization. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this eighteenth day of July, in the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred and sixty-eight and of the Independence of the United States of America the one hundred and ninety-third. In politics, imllke commercials, there's no fame or glory in being No. 2.* Tear -Jerkers? By all means they are! Anyone who watches strategy shatter with the announcement that one candidate has reached the magic number of delegate votes can well imagine that a politician must have inspired the familiar "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" or "I Ain't Got Nobody*'. The smilethrough- the tears routine would do justice to the juiciest soap opera. And those who watch with the loyalty of a faithful pet, gain not only comedy, mystery and tears, but all of the dramatic impact we could expect to see on the late, late movie. The fact that we are in a complete quandry after hearing the forceful words of the nominating speakers is unimportant. At this point, what those of us behind the big tube are thinking, or toping, doesn't enter into the picture. Next November we will again be wooed with elegant phrases by the victor, and it will be our important contribution for the good of our country to spend the next four years deciding what he really meant. If you think you're having fun now, don't forget to tune in on the Democratic sequel. After all they've had a good deal more experience in telling jokes. And you humorless folks who find the conventions as annoying as the buzz of a hungry mosquito, fasten your seat belts! It will grow tp the dimension of a busy bee's drone by fall. Our city park is really becoming the hub of activity in McHenry during the summer season and this is as it should be. Last week, the regular performance of the stage band was preceded one evening by another treat provided by 566th Air Force band Dlaying some of the big band favorites most of us learned to love when such musical aggregations were heard more frequently. This week Tuesday it wastne Harmonaires from Arkansas who were welcomed into the park for a fine program. Together with family gatherings, play on the tennis courts and such, the park is seldom empty. K.A.F. "Suits are being filed each week against delinquent taxpayers in order to obtain judgments against them which in turn will be collected and will constitute liens upon the property owned by the taxpayer. In the event you do not pay your personal property tax without forcing the county to resort to litigation, the costs of litigation will be added to your tax bill, which in the final analysis will make the payment that much greater when you are forced to pay the same.
