LAKELAND PARK NEWS Chrble Humana 38&1606 JRTY STUDENTS OMPLETESW1M 3QUIREMENTS fir; tf/l • ' The, swimming tests have all been completed and out of the 127 kids taking swimming lessons this year forty completed the requirements in their class to earn their Red Cross card. In-the swimmer class which is the last step before eligibility fctr life saving, six swimmers pissed the difficult test which included a ten minute swim and hundred yard swims for each of three strokes. Each swimmer was rated for his skill and given a grade besides earning the card. Mary Ellen Bolger passed qnd good ratings were given to Allen Plucinski, Mary Jane Lakowski and Donna Humann. Excellent ratings were given to Mary Johnson and Robert Wohnrade. Six cards were earned in the intermediate class. Jeffrey Bierman and Christine Doherty passed and a rating of good was earned by Debra Oldham. John Koch, Mike Johnson and Cynthia Doherty earned excellent. Seven advanced beginners received their cards. Judy Johnson and Steven Choate passed and good ratings were earned by Danny Koch, Mary Beth Humann and Dennis Choate. Kent Choate and Cindy Kamp earned excellent ratings. In the beginner classes where the lessons begin with such basics as putting your face in the water and learning breath control and then ends with diving Into deep water and swimming which is a major accomplishment and the springboard to other swimming skills - twentyone kids passed the requirements. Those who passed were Paul Cynowa, Michael Miller, Robert Low, Laura Haymes and Beth Ann Koch. Good ratings were earned by Scott Wohrade, -Carolyn Doherty, Beth Steinsdorfer, and Russell Weingart. Excellent ratings were earned by Dennis Choate, Penny Schaan, Peggy McMillan, Mary Harper, Robert Hromec, Robin Haymes, Debra Krier, Pam Krasucki, Susan McMillan, Charlene Mc- Gowan, Darlene McGowan and Steven Choate. Green 385-4500 During the lessons Pepper was helped by several girls who spent most of the two weeks in the water assisting her with the large class. This enabled more swimmers to increase their skills to a greater degree than would' have teen possible otherwise. A large hand of thanks should be given to Joann Shabow, Patti Rogers, Cathy and Donna Humann and Linda Exline who came from Holiday Hills to help out. Tuesday, August 13 - Boy Scout meeting 7 to 9 p.m. LITTLE LEAGUE The only games scheduled during the last week were for the Minor League All Stars and despite a valiant effort by all the boys on the team they lost series to Cary All Stars. At the moment no other games have been scheduled in the minor league division. All the boys deserve a large hand for a job well done. PAPER DRIVE The senior class of Marian Central high school is conducting a paper drive. Anybody who would care to save old newspapers for a few weeks can have them picked up by Joanne Rizzo by calling 385-2728. They will be collecting up until August 20 and would appreciate your donations of old papers. The number to call is 385-2728. STORK GRAM Elaine and Gerry Worth are slightly elated over the recent birth of their first child, a lovely little girl whom they named Stephanie Rae. The tiny bud was born on July 16 at Mc- Henry hospital where she weighed 6 lbs. 8 oz. at birth and measured 19% inches. The proud grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Willard Nelson of Cooney Heights and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Worth of Broadview. BIRTHDAY GREETINGS My secretary goofed last week and no birthdays were announced. So belated greetings to Elaine Piasecki and Murph Kwiatek who celebrated on the second and to Gloria Flannigan and Tom Giacomo on the third. Carmon Hodges had a birthday an the fourth and Bob Kroening and Pam Mullen share the fifth with Pam becoming eight years old. Jim Daurio and Margaret Lane celebrated on the eighth. For the current birthday kids we wish greetings too. Lorraine Arient and Pat Richardson and Robert Moore celebrate on the ninth. The tenth is the big day for Allen Meurer, Dolores Selzer, Carol Hafer and Tammy Leone who will be nine years old. Jackie Richardson will have seven candles on her cake and Karen Crook and Jim Hansen claim the day too. Chris Rogers will be a big ten and Randy Fergen will be six on the twelfth. Denise Bucaro, Jim Oeffling, and George Hendle will light their candles on the thirteenth. Jerry Rogers and Terri Mai will be six years old celebrate (Hi the fourteenth. ° CONDOLENCES Our very deepest sympathy is offered to Bernice Donarski on the sudden death of her husband, Alexander, who passed away on Aug. 3. The Donarskis had just sold their home and moved to Sunnyside to live with their daughter, Elmira Kujak and her family, three weeks ago. They were residents of Lakeland Park for more than twelve years in their home on Highview. He leaves his wife, Bernice, one daughter, Elmira, and husband, Albert Kujak and two sons, Norbert and wife, Flora and Marvin and wife, Lynn seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Services were held at the Peter Justen funeral home with the funeral Mass<>at St. Mary's church, oh Wednesday. STROLLING THROUGH THE PARK Between swimming classes and the nasty old flu bug the past week very little strolling anywhere was done. The highlight of the week was the All Star football game with Green Bay continuing the pro record of wins again. Lots of local men golfed in the Moose tournament last Sunday and won some prizes and then treated their wives to a marvelous roast beef dinner at the Moose hall. Chairman for the event was Clare Haerle. There have been more than the usual number of grass fires again in recent weeks and possibly we need a visit from Smokey the Bear to educate people in the care and feeding of trash fires and the careless handling of matches. Rudy and Dorothy Lense have had an unusual couple of weeks entertaining Rudy's cousins from Cologne, Germany. Their guests are Marie Luise and Hannelore Kalis who have been visiting in the United States since July 11. They are returning on August 11. During their stay they visited relatives in Antioch and Chicago and spent the greater portion of their time in our subdivision where they enjoyed swimming and sunning on the beach. One of the girls speaks English and Rudy brushed up on his German so they didn't have too many communication problems. On their way back home they are planning to spend a few days in New Tork as they only had a tantalizing glimpse of it on their arrival. - In the words of a famous Texan, "Vail come back". George Manning is home on leave after spending two years in Japan with the Air Force. He'll be here till the end of ; the month when he has to report : for a new overseas assignment on August 30 in South Carolina. Anniversary greetings to Jane and Ken Grothman slightly: late. They marked twenty-three years of togetherness on Augustv 3. A great big welcome to Mr. and Mrs. Buddy Ramsey who moved into the Herzog house cm. Lakewood avenue. They are from Elgin and Mrs. Ramsey already has lots of friends here \ as she is Judy Bierman'smom! Best wishes to troop 320 of ; the Girl Scouts who will be attending the state fair in Springfield on Monday. Hope they have ' a great time. A huge snapping turtle was found in the creek a few days ago by some boys and the vicious monster ended up as turtle soup. We haven't seen one of these * devils for quite a few years but guess they've just been coy. The beast jumped two feet to attack and then tried to devour a shovel. Pull inyour toes! STORK GRAM The Harris family added a new member on July 29 with the birth of their second child, and first son, Guy Richard. The young man who was born at McHenry hospital weighed 8 lbs. 14% ozs at birth. Carol and Lonnie brought him home on "RAYMOND SMITH ATTENDS ARMY RESERVE CAMP Raymond C. Smith, son of Mrs. Marian P. Miller, Wonder Lake, a student at the University of Toledo at Toledo, Ohio, is attending Army Reserve Officers' Training corps summer camp. The course began July 1 at Indiantown Gap Military reservation, Annville, Pa. During the encampment, he is receiving six weeks of training in leadership, rifle marksmanship, physical conditioning and other military subjects. Upon successful completion of summer camp and graduation from college, he is eligible to be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Cadet Smith is a 1965 graduate of Rogers high school at Toledo. In making the announcement, Sam Leibsohn, president of the corporation and Allan Leibsohn, executive vice-president, noted that Gladstone's had grown substantially in recent years. "We've reached a point," they said, "where additional growth will require new ideas, new personnel and a great deal of planning. Mr. Thomas brings a diversity of talents and a strong business background to our organization." Thomas comes to Gladstones from the Oak Manufacturing Co. in Crystal Lake, where he was manager of communications. Prior to that he had worked as a magazine editor for a leading insurance company. The McHenry County Industrial Education and Training association provides related instruction to approximately 100 apprentices in McHenry county.
