State law requires a physical examination and immunization against measles, smallpox, tetanus, diphtheria, polio and whooping cough for any child enrolled for the first time in a public, private or parochial school. According to the Illinois State Bar association, the law relating to physical examinations applied only to public school children until the 1967 legislature changed the law to include newly-enrolled pupils in private and parochial schools as well. The immunization requirement, which was added in 1967 is subject to medical approval in the case of any individual child. The law provides an exemption from both the physical examination and inoculations for children whose parents object on Constitutional grounds. For every non-exempted child physical examinations are required before the child enters kindergarten or first grade and again before the child enters the fifth and ninth grades. They are also required for a child of any level entering a new schoolif the child had not previously been examined at the grades designated by law while attending school in Illinois. School authorities may also require additional examinations whenever it is deemed necessary. Immunizations against the specified diseases are required for nonexempted children entering kindergarten or first grade or entering school for the first time in Illinois. Pupils entering the fifth and sixth grades may also be required to have immunizations, or booster immunizations for any one or more of these disease by the Department of Public health. A physician who feels a child should not have one or more of the required immunizations can indicate that fact on the physical examination form and the requirements of the law will have been fulfilled. ^ Physical examinations include a check of a child's teeth, feet and vision as well as 4ris general health. A child's parent or guardian can select any physician licensed to practice medicine in all of its branches in Illinois to give the physical examination, any licensed dentist to give the dental examination, any licensed physician or po- • diatrist to give the foot examination and any licensed physician or optometrist to give the vision examination. The Department of Public Health is authorized to arrange for the examination of children if parents fail to do so. However, no ctyild will be examined or immunized whose parent or guardian has signed a statement of their Constitutional objection 1 and presented it to the school board or Teachers College - board. The fact that a child has been exempted from a physical examination or immunizations does not excuse him from participating in school physical education programs. the addition of Marge Kennedy and Jack Kennedy to their sales staff and Carol Vavroch as full time secretary.
