VOTEI Saturday, October 5 SCHOOL BOND ISSUE Hold Open Home On West 28-29 Hie Board of Education of District 156 will hold an Open House in the new high school, West campus, 4724 West Crystal Lake road, Sept. 28-29 from 1 to 5 p.m. Originally slated for August 24-25, a change in the dates is necessitated by the delay in receiving several items. Representatives of local organizations and members of the Citizen's Advisory committee will assist in showing the building to the public, and high school students will also be on hand to aid in conducting tours. This bond issue is necessary for the total educational climate and to provide room for pupils to learn and teachers to teach. BOARD VIEWS The District 15 board of education and its staff is particularly interested and concerned with equality of opportunity in education and the overall clifhate of education for pupils and teachers. In a free society, equality of educational opportunity is a basic ideal and should always be kept as a civic goal. The individual's schooling is the best gateway to a satisfying productive life, and full education is the best hope for a just society. Whatever else is done to promote full educational opportunity there must be a maximum effort to achieve a healthy educational climate. Only by this avenue is there hope for success with each individual -- with the physically, mentally, or culturally disadvantaged, or with those who are especially gifted, who possess exceptional intellectual or artistic abilities. By individualized instruction we do not mean a simple tutoring procedure. We mean instruction that is designed for the individual student rather than for an_entire class and that the individual will receive the personal attention from the teacher. This is an impossibility in crowded conditions which District 15 is now experiencing. It is imperative to remember that the Oct. 5 bond issue will build the proper education-; al climate. A physical building is only a tool to aid in this immense educational task. Education, of our students is primary hoWe/yer, adequate space is needed for students to learn and for teachers to teach. Each year teaching space is of more paramount importance* The teacher shortage has been recognized during the past few years as the single crucial issue in education. If the climate of our teaching is not improved and does not continue to attract and hold our outstandingteachers, they will search for more satisfying teaching conditions. We must do all we can to improve the educational climate of our schools. If we fail to provide adequate space, then we are forcing our teachers to go to school districts where class size and teaching conditions are better than they are in McHenry. The educational climate for students is often taken for granted or overlooked, but today pupils need greater individual attention than ever before. Emphasizing the individualization of instruction brings a new and personal dimension of education to the center of concern - the teacher's knowledge of the learner. Effective instruction requires more than knowing something to teach and having a practical grasp of good teaching methods. It requires a healthy teaching climate and a knowledge of the learner, his background, motives, interests, perspectives and attitude , his hopes and aspirations or his hopelessness and lack of aspiration.
