And pay proper tribute to the many zooming Junior colleges, which offer just as good teaching (often better) than Harvard or Yale! If you have the real urge to learn, you'll become educated at ANY fcollege! By - George W. Crane, Ph. D...M.D. CASE G- 568: Larry H„ aged 19, wants to go to college. "Dr. Crane," he asked, "I could attend Junior college about 25 miles from home. "But I have an uncle whograduated from Harvard and he wants me to attend there. "But that is almost 1,000 miles away, and the tuition is very high. "So what do you think I should do?" USE "HORSE SENSE" Going to college is somewhat like buying a tubs of toothpaste. Why should Larry go to Boston, for instance, to get the same brand of toothpaste he could purchase at home? And that is equally true of higher education. You get the same brand of English and Math and Psychology and Chemistry at all colleges. Unless Larry's uncle wants to finance Larry's tuition at Harvard, then it would be smarter for Larry to enroll in his neighboring Junior college. Many college graduates place an abnormal "halo" about their Alma Mater and still show partisan pride in their school's athletic standing. But from the neutral observer* s position, it does not payto run half way across the U.S.A to college, unless you get a free scholarship thereto, or your dad has plenty of money to finance such travel. Remember, during Thanksgiving and other holidays, you will want to come home for a visit. But if you are 1,000 or 2,000 miles away, the roundtrip fare will be great. So it is not financially wise to succumb to that "distant pastures appear greener." If you are taking pre-law or pre-medicine or pre-dentistry, etc., your local Junior college will offer you admirable courses. And when you graduate as a lawyer, dental surgeon, physician or other expert, it is very rare for any patient or client to ask where you attended college. Nowadays the essential requisite is that you complete college SOMEWHERE! Many colleges are now swamped with applicants. So be glad you can matriculate at any college available! And that goes double if you are accepted at ANY medical, dental, law or engineering school. Some colleges boast unduly about the scientific degrees of the heads of their departments. But you will find that the younger instructors often do a much better job of lecturing in the classroom. So those fancy degrees of the head men will avail you little, since you seldom have %iuch contact with them, anyway, unless you are a graduate student. And if you doubt my statement that the men with the most degrees are likely to be only second-rate teachers, send for my "Test for Teachers", enclosing a long stamped, return envelope, plus 20 cents. Rate your entire faculty thereon and you will soon spot the superbteachers, evenin high school and grammar school too. BUYING TRENDS TO BE LEARNED IN AREA SURVEY Area households will be included in a nation-wide survey of plans for consumer buying and home improvement to, be conducted by the U.S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census, according to Theodore F. Olson, director of the bureau's regional office in Chicago. Bureau representatives will visit a sample of households in this area during the first week of October to ask questions about expected purchases of new and used cars, new homes, house hold durables, and plans for home alterations and repairs. They will also obtain information about recent'expenditures for all these items. The survey is conducted quarterly and is an important guide to trends in consumer spending. Since 1920, the rate of growth in consumer investment has been more than double that of business investment. The annual | vestment by consumers iiidu$r j able goods and houses is now- j far larger than business investment in new plant and equipment. s r; All answers given to these?? interviewers by families and ^ households are confidential and>n are protected by federal lawjl/i COUNCIL ACTS ON C0URT*°j The Woodstock City Council1,1^ in meeting Tuesday night, votar_ ed again to table the court houslr issue until its next meeting.
