William Weber, pastor of St. John's church at Johnsburg, left Tuesday morning for the east and will embark on the North German Lloyd steamer, S.S. Berlin on June 23 for Europe, where he will tour the continent and make an extended visit. He will land at Bremen on July 2 and go from there by airship to Cologne, the aerial trip taking two hours as against eight hours by train. Patrick Conway was the victim of a surprise party at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George Adams, on Supda* evening. The party was fffanned in honor of his birthday anniversary and a jolly evening was spent in cards, music and dancing. The D.W. Whiting farm near Smith's Corners has recently been sold to John Gritzuk of Barrington. The farm has been occupied by John Miller and family. Earl Dowell, a graduate from thf. conjmunity high school with "J class of this year, 1928, isf?now in charge of the concessions and registrations at the club house of the Pistakee Bay Golf club. Earl has assisted at the McHenry Country club in "this city for several seasons. Although practically a new golf grounds, the Pistakee Bay course is a good one, with plenty of rolling hills and hazards to make things interesting. Miss Edna Geist, one of the teachers of the community high school last year, was married at':?her home at Bremen j Ind., Juffe 20, to J.C. Hirschman of Indianapolis, Ind. Jack .Ryan left the first of the week for Detroit, where he will enjoy a two weeks vacation from his duties at the Plaindealer office. { TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 24, 1943) Another McHenry couple to reach their golden anniversary day are Mr. and Mrs. John Panknin who celebrated the occasion on June 18. Death once more invaded the ranks of McHenry*s old time residents when Mrs. Ben Stilling, 75, passed away at her home on Pearl street after an illness of two months. /The Stanley Hill family of Chicago has moved to an apartment in the home of Mrs.Nellie Bacon on Main street. St. Mary's Catholic church, McHenry, was the scene of a lovely ^redding June 9, when Miss Mareta Blake became the bride of Carl James Serock of Eva Unti, who were confirmed at St. Patrick's church. Quite a number of McHenry county farmers are making use of boys from towns in McHenry county in solving part of their labor needs, according to an announcement by Farm Adviser John H>. Brock, who is in charge of victory farm volunteer work in the county. The first concert of the city band to be given which is directed by Paul Yanda will be Sunday evening July 4. The personnel of the band has changed with many employed in defense work this year and not able to take part as a result, the young folks will carry on without the help of the older members and also any players from nearby cities. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 12, 1958) Mrs. Pauline Pries has received word that she has been given a scholarship to attend the /Pi&lic Health Nursing course at the University of Minnesota. Mrs. Pries has been the Tlocal school nurse since last September. OnOyof the area's oldest organizations, the Pistakee Yacht club, beginning its sixty-first year as a sailing and socia1 club, enjoyed a gala dinner dance recently. Rev. and Mrs Henry Heise of McCullom Lake will celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary June 16. Dr. and Mrs. Leonard Pawlikowski have been elected copresidents of St. Mary's Home and School association. Rev. Fr. William Collins officiated at a nuptial ritKjvhich united Miss Judy Bartmamvarfd Mr. Eugene Nett in St. Patrick's Catholic church June 7. Dr. and Mrs. George Alvary welcomed a daughter at Memorial hospital on June 4. Mrs. Betty Fredericks and five children have moved to West Shore Beach from New Cumberland, Penn. Their husband and father, Douglas Fredericks, left for Korea recently to be away sixteen months in the service of his country. Lucille Boni of Island Lake has been confined to McHenry hospital with hand, knee and head injuries suffered when she fell from a car. EMPLOYMENT SURVEY TO BE TAKEN LOCALLY Persons in this area will be asked questions about their employment alnd unemployment the week of June 17-22 by Census Bureau interviewers, Director Theodore F. Olson of the Bureau's regional office in Chicago announced. The questions are part of the Bureau's monthly population survey taken simultaneously throughout the nation to gather up-to-date information about the U.S. population. The Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics uses these data principally to evaluate the changes in the national job picture. Households to be interviewed here are part of a scientifically selected national sample. Their identity is confidential, and the facts obtained in the survey will be used only for statistical purposes. LEGION BASEBALL TEAM DEFEATED BY EcEENRY 8 r 3 The American Legion baseball team played its second gamfe of the season at Wonder, Lake last Sunday with the McHenry Legion team. The teams were tied in the fifth inning 3 to 3, but due to good hitting McHenry won the game 8 to 3. All in all it was a very good game. The boys were good in the field and very good defensive playing. The next games to be played will be Saturday, June 22, at Woodstock, Sunday, June 23, at Crystal Lake, and Wednesday, June 26, Harvard at Wonder Lake. Players on the Wonder Lake Legion team are as follows: David Sard, Chuck Sullivan, Wilbur Haak, Jr., Larry Cristy, Bob Potter, Beaver Marke, Bill Rasmussen, Don Smith, C.J. Robert Lunak and Albert Nelson were patients this past week at McHenry. NOTES OF SYMPATHY Our condolences to the family 6f Ralph Hartsell, Wonderview, who was found dead af his home, Monday, June 10. YOUNG AT HEART The Young at Heart will not have any meetings until Wednesday July 3. The group meets the first and third Wednesdays of each month at Christ the King hall on E. Wonder Lake road. BOY'S STATE WINNER Larry W. Cristy, 6507 McCullom Lake road, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Cristy was chosen and is being sponsored by the American Legion Post 1169 of Wonder Lake to go to Boy's State at Springfield, on June 23. Larry is 16 years old, graduated from Harrison grade school in Wonder Lake and will be entering his senior year in McHenry high this fall. Larry played football on the McHenry high team and also is playing on the Wonder Lake Legion baseball team. Larry's school activities include the wrestling team and on the student council for four years. Larry plans cm going into college to study agriculture. RIFLE SQUAD DANCE The Wonder Lake American Legion Post 1169 rifle squad is sponsoring a benefit dance on Saturday, June 29, 9 p.m. til?? An orchestra will be playing your favorite dance music. Tickets may be obtained from the rifle squad members or at the post home. JULY 4 FIREWORKS The American Legion Post 1169 of Wonder Lake which sponsors the July 4 fireworks display every year will be going from house to house for donations in the next two weeks. Every year this event is made more spectacular by the donations made by Wonder Lake residents.
