Earl Walsh SO I HEAR Sports Editor % Eddie Wittrock brought us a nifty item from the Art Fair. Dated 1904, the hand written enciled note reads as follows: "The one characteristic an Irishman admires in a woman, above all others, is courage." (They don't mind a good cook, either). .Had "no >idea Harvey .Nye's .molasses paint would attract so much attention. Harry Dean wants the franchise. Just take your place in the line, men. Our Harvey knows when he has something good and isn't going to be rushed. When the rain poured down on Monday, we looked out the window and remarked that it was really coming down. One of our smart office girls came back with, "That's the only way it ever comes, isn't it?" Next time the clouds gather, we are going to observe that a storm is blowing UP. See what she will do with that one. "JACKIE" GUFFEY If our first editor, "Mose", could come back and see how this newspaper is put together in the modern way, he would wonder what became of the printers ink, the ink smeared aprons and the clanging old machinery. But, "Mose" could look over in one comer and see an old line-o-type machine with a familiar operator hitting the keys. Yep. "Jackie " Guffey, a holdover from the old days is still at the controls and smilin' through. "Jackie" was always a top operator and a great favorite with her fellow workers. Haven't heard fr&m our pate the Cub fans lately. Must aw be out of town. Just when we were convinced those Cubs were for real and planned to go see them play ball, somebody pulled the rug out from under them. We plan to see them, anyhow, and will let you know about our scouting expedition. Pitchers today seem to aim for that outside corner most of the time and catchers set up a target to let the world know where he wants the ball. Pitchers are so used to this that when they pitch inside they hit the batter all too often. In his junior year, Pruiett was switched to offensive left guard and won the starting job. As a starting guard on last year's Michigan State U team, he also kicked 16 consecutive extra points and a 37 yard field goal. On occasion, he was also used defensively, one of two players on the Spartan squad to go both offensively and defensively in recent years. To cap his college career, Mitch played in the 1967 Blue-Gray game. When asked where he would be used by the Rifles, Coach Gene C ichowski answered,' • Be-., cause of Pruiett* s speed apra size, we may try him a£ fallback. Along with Bill Bodle, Pruiett could strengthen our ground game considerably. With Flinn or Tommy Myers at Quarterback and Warren Nicholas at flanker-back, we hope to have a more varied and balanced attack." Dabiero, Rifle general manager who signed Pruiett, commented that he worked hard to sign the 5'11", 205 lb. Pruiett. Because of his experience at fullback, guard, linebacking, and kicking, he will be a great asset to the club. Pruiett intends to work and reside in the Waukegan area. This verse from Romans is part of the Lesson- Sermon to be read in all Christian Science churches this Sunday. Title of the Lesson is "Christian Science." Among related passages from the 'denominational textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy are these lines: "Sickness, sin, and death, being inharmonious, do not originate in God nor belong to His governments. His law, rightly understood, destroys them." The service sit Christian Science Society, Lincoln road and Eastwood lane, begins at 10:30 a.m. and is open to the public. Thus far this is the best game played and if one did not know or realize that these boys are qf ages 13-14-15 and playing because they love the sport of baseball one would think that and judge that they can play as well as some pro^. Once more we are asking you not to forget the change of fields made Wednesday June 26 - 6 p.m.-TIGERS VS GIANTS Sunday June 30-1 p.m. - GIAJ^JTS VS CARDS. 3:30 p.m. BRAVES VS TIGERS. ~ On Sunday, June 16 not only being Dad's Day this is the day the first double header was run. The first game that was played was between the Braves and the Cards. The starting pitcher for the Cards was Greg Bartos who went for two innings for his first start as a pitcher and is now called a second year veteran, For his first 'start since he pitched in Little League he did a great job of throwing to the guy behind the plate and still was with the thought my buddy runs the ball game. In the two innings that he had pitched, Bartos had given iq> walks numbering two and three strikeouts and no runs were allowed to score. Bartos went into the third inning pitching to two batters and developed a problem and then was replaced by Prazak who went the remaining five innings and doing a good job and throwing a ball the boys call a submarine pitch. Prazak came in and pitched to three batters and got the side out and wefet on to pitch the remaining four innings. Prazak had four strikeouts and gave up one run, four walks and two hits. He kept a cool head to have his team come out on top. The team was run while on the field by Rob Wickenkamp who proved that he knew his baseball. The catcher for the first two innings was Prazak who took over the pitching chores and Morgenson, his Little teammate, went from catch the rest of the game, doing one good heck of a job. The starting pitcher for the Braves was Pete Merkle who league third to threw a good ball game and with his baseball sense came iq> with the following pitching for five innings. He had seven strikeouts, giving upnins walks, three hits on which seven runs scored. Ron Miller took over for the last inning andproceeded to mow them. He faced three batters and came up with three straight strikeouts. John Pitzen was the catcher for the Braves and with that wonderful arm of his kept the Cards very close to their respective base..The second game of the day was between the Sox and the Tigers which started at 3:30 p.m. and proved that even though every (me thinks you are through you can come up with a surprise and make the eyes open up. The starting pitcher for the Sox was Tom Gausden who went the whole distance for the Sox. Even though he was a little sluggish at times, with the encouraging words from the Sox fans, came thru like a trooper. Gausden's run down as follows - pitched 7 innings, had 9 strikeouts gave up 7 walks, three hits and eight runs. His catcher for the whole game was Del Gerstad who held his own behind the plate. The catcher of record for the Sox was Gerstad who was stubborn and didn't give an inch. The starting pitcher for the Tigers was Joe Dehn who while on the mound pitched good ball even though he gave up 8 hits, 9 walks and 12 runs. He came up with 6 strikeouts. Del Gerstad was the game catcher for the Sox and once again Wanti came thru with another goodgs hind the plate, the for this game was SO) TIGERS - 8. The final score for the first game was CARDS-7 BRAVES- 1. Editor's Note: The former Pony League diamond on the V.F.W. grounds is being put in shape for the Babe Ruth League.
