W. 385-7515 Thirteen men joined the ranks of journeymen carpenters in the Fox river valley as they completed their four-year apprenticeship training. The men come from Elgin, Aurora, Crystal Lake, Carpentersville, Woodstock, Elmhurst, St. Charles, Huntley, Hebron, and Wonder Lake. All were enrolled in the Fox Valley apprenticeship training program. Graduates were honored at a dinner and received diplomas and stfeel squares in recognition of their accomplishments. Attending the dinner were representatives of the Joint Apprenticeship committee, the Illinois Department of Labor, instructors of the apprenticeship program, and union officials. FIVE STUDENTS •WIN PLACES ON DEAN'S LISTINGS Several area residents were among 149 Elgin Community college students who were named to the dean's list ot earned academic honors during the second semester of the school year. To be placed on the dean's list a student must maintain a cumulative gradepoint index of at least 3.5 (half way between A and B). For academic honors a student must have a grade-point index of at least 3.0. ,On the dean's list from McHenry were James E. Fitzgerald, Jr., of Rt. 9 and Mrs. Evelyne L. Walter of 3711 High street, and academic honors went to Robert J. Dowe, 1412 Richmond road, Raymond S. Pollock, 1706 N. Court and Richard J. Soda, Jr., 1007 S. Osage. NEW TROOPERS The Illinois State Police academy has graduated 37 new troopers as it neared the halfway mark In its added manpower goal. The force now on duty numbers 1,311 and an additional class in training will make the total more than 1,350. Director of Public Safety Ross V. Randolph commented that approximately 150 additional places will be filled in continuous training classes opening in the fall. There are some heavy hearts. SENIOR CITIZENS enior Citizens folk from Whispering Oaks enjoyed the pot-luck dinner held on June 24 in spite of the rain. There was a lot of good food, and it was well taken care of. Some folks had such a good time they stayed tin &nd played cards. There were happy birthdays sung to those who had a birthday, in June. Justf heard that one of the ladies lost her diamond ring while making her meat balls for the pot-luck dinner. NEWS BITS There are some real special folks living in Whispering Oaks, artists, musicians, retired civil service men such as Lt. Col. Lawrence Shertole of 1020 Sommerset and John Hill, a navy service retiree. They are new folks from Bremerton, Wash., John and Anna Hill. They live at 1116 Manschester Mall. Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Ward are new at 1119 Manchester. They have a daughter, Lynne, who is a junior at DePauw college at Green Castle, Ind. Mr. and Mrs. Hedeman had visitors, Mrs. Rohrig DesPlaines. She is Mrs man's mother, and Marion Warnimont her sister alsofrOm DesPlaines and Mrs. Marge Rohner of Portage, Wis., a sister-in-law. Mrs. Grace Chambers, daughter of Lu and Bert Welker is recuperating after i jgery. Her son, Timmy, is her also at 4506 Ashley. Donald Therensr son of Mr. and Mrs. Therens, of 4605 Sussex, visited his folks. He came from Cleveland, Ohio, with his Wife and eight children in ; a brand new camper. They parked at Wonder Lake. The first • night one of the boys caught eight fish. The grandparents came to see them every night they were there, and enjoyed the family togetherness. ATTENDS SHOWER i On Thursday evening June 20, I attended a lovely bridal shower on Miss CarolerJGebhart, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Gebhart of Chicago. The shower was given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Guenther of 1501 Dogwood Lane, Mt; Prospect. The home was beautifully " done with red carpeting, with the winding stairs done in red. It w£s a tri level home done in white with gold accessories, and beautiful figurines from Germany, plus other painted things and China. I met some old friends of time gone by, and it was refreshing to reminisce about some of the wonderful tinies together. SHOP IN MCHENRY By Gerry Breede The 1968 convention of the Department of Illinois, ladies auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars, was held recently at the Sherman House in Chicago. Attending the convention were presidents and delegates from auxiliaries in the sixteen Districts in the state of Illinois. Representing the ladies auxiliary to V.F.W. Post 4600 of McHenry were Ethel Groth, Marge Moreth, Mary Kuemmel and Gerry Breede. Sophia Goldstein, national representative and past national president of the ladies' auxiliary to the V.F.W. attended; also present were twenty-One Department of Illinois Past Presidents. A most impressive ceremony was the presentation of the auxiliary presidents escorted by their respective American flags and V.F.W. auxiliary banners. A memorial service in memory of all the memberS of auxiliaries in the Department of Illinois was held. This service is conducted in memory of all auxiliary members who passed away in the ipast year and is a beautiful service to witness. It is with sympathy I note that thirty-four members from the 5th district departed this world this past year. It is with great pride for our organization that a report was made on the presentation of 903 American flags to youth groups in this past year.
