Fires and explosions are a significant cause of injury among boaters, according to the Illinois Department of Conservation. The possibility of flash fires and explosions is greatly reduced on craft ventilated according to state regulations. The tJ.S. Coast Guard pamphlet, "Pleasure Craft," has further recommendations. All compartments should be closed when fueling and the fuel hose nozzle should be grounded to a metal section of the intake line to prevent static electricity All compartments should be thoroughly ventilated after fueling. Compartments, tank areas and machinery should be checked for fumes. Fuel lines and bilges should be clean. Extra fuel should be carried in the proper container and the boat operator should take special precautions to prevent vapors from accumulating in confined areas.
