'» < \ ; i Publish: Nov. 13 and 15, 1968 HOME FIRES KILL CHILDREN If you've ever left your toddler alone in the house while you " Just ran next door", here are some alarming statistics for you. One third of the 2,000 American children who die in house fires each year were left alone wh$n fire broke out. Actually your Child is safer from fire in school than in the home for, while schools hold regular fire drills, few parents stage home drills. Yet the chance of being trapped in a fire at home is 200 times greater than in school. To teach your children to keep away from matches, stoves, flammable liquids and electrical connections is only the beginning of sound fire training. If a fire starts in your home, even toddlers should be taught to think one word -- escape. Here's how to direct a home fire drill. Chart two escape routes from each room in the house, the basement and garage. These will be doors, windows and stairways. Teach yoiir children these routes and set up plenty "what if"? situations for the children to answer about fireprobability* Buy an inexpensive rope ladder for each upstairs bedroom and teach the children how to rig it iq>. Show how a window can be broken with a sturdy toy or chair and how jagged edges must be scraped before exiting through the window. Next time junior breaks a window with a baseball, let him break the rest of the window before Dad repairs it. Choose an outside site where the family will meet in case of fire. Take the children there for a trial run. Emphasize that they must never pause for a favorite toy or . dress. Emphasize the phrase, "escape immediately". Junior fire fighters are a menace in a crisis. Tell your children never to try to extinguish the fire themselves -- just get out and stay out. Most children who die in fires are asphyxiated by smoke before they are burned. Warn children of the extreme danger of smoke inhalation. Tell them to go out a window rather than a smoke-filled hallway. IN COLLEGE BAND Miss Carol £chuh, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William A.
