Over 52,000 persons were killed in traffic accidents in the United States in 1967 and nearly 2 million more were injured. And in Illinois, one out of every 10 drivers was involved in a reportable accident during last year. Those are staggering figures when you consider there are around 6 million drivers in the State. Scan-Am company, one of McHenry'^ flourishing industries will have a new home in a pew location in the near future. Above is the artist's conception of the building now under construction south of McHenry, on Rt. 31. The company hopes to move from the present location on Crystal Lake road to its new quarters by the spring of 1969. Scan-Am is in the business of sales and installation of internal communication systems and specialized banking equipment. Now in its tenth year of operation, Scan-Am counts among its users some of the leading companies in the nation, such,as Argonne National Laboratory, Sears Roebuck, Consolidated Foods and Consolidated Freight-ways, among others, The company is dedicatd to the concept ofproviding quality products and service to its users. Among their twenty4employees are a number of local people in sales, service, clerical and administrative capacities, adding considerably to the bus* iriess climate of the city. , ' •" * Accidents don't just happen . . . they are caused. Traffic safety experts tell us that most of them could be avoided if drivers knew, understood and observed traffic laws, signs and signals and if they maintained their cars in safe condition and concentrated their full attention on driving and showed proper respect for others. It is a rather feeble excuse, therefore, to say, "accident" if one fails to do these things. Every time you slide into the driver's seat and start the engine you must assume the obligations that go with driving and the privilege of having a driver's license. Know your rules of the road. For a copy of "Rules of the Road", write to Paul Powell, Secretary of State, Springfield, Illinois 62706. FEDERAL FUNDS SOUGHT Gov. Samuel H. Shapiro has submitted to the federal government "The Illinois State Plan for the Construction of Community Mental Health Centers" for the fiscal year 1968. Under this federal program Illinois is eligible to receive funds totaling $1,406,652 for construction of community mental health centers. Since 1965 Illinois grants totalling $5,270,677, have been approved by the federal government. VALIANT VISCOUNT Michael "Mick" Daurio is a teenager to which the community can point with pride. Mick, who resides in McHenry with his parents, is currently attending school at McHenry County college. He is a history major and hopes some day to teach. "Mick", who is 18, has been a member of the McHenry Viscounts Drum & Bugle corps for five years. Currently he holds the rank of drum sergeant. Through his imagination L and ingenuity the. - „ Viscounty i now have what Mick calls si j double bass tandem drum, which he personally plays with the same skill with which he made them. Meeting new friends all over the nation has been one Of the v many exciting things that has happened to him since becoming a member of the Viscounts. Being a part of a competing drum ' corps has taught "Mick" selfconfidence as well as the knowledge he must depend on his fellow man, for in a drum corps contest no one is better or worse than the whole team. One of his most memorable experiences was in 1967, when the Viscounts travelled to New Orleans to compete in the national championship contest. Michael Daurio, one of the Valiant Viscounts, extends an invitation to any boy or girl, 12 to 20, to join him and the Viscounts Drum and Bugle corps and "have a ball". There is no charge for instruments or uniforms. Anyone interested in becoming a member may do so by contacting Tim Koleno at 385- 5566 or Tony Leverso at 546 4354. itractors Elect Officers .
