MARGARET (/NEIL Clerk of the Court Publish: Nov. 25, Dec. 4,11,1968 Drivers "r Seat | One of America's leading tire pianufacturers has come up with some interesting ideas about tire safety and styling. f One apparently excellent saff ety and convenience idea is' a one - piece foamed aluminum ring inside the tire than permits to 50 miles of travel on a "flat" tire without further daimage tp the tire. The aluminum is • rapped with a rubber tread to protect the inside of the tir& This feature should allow adri<r ver experiencing a blowout th maintain greater control of his automobile, and the 50 - mile driving range of the "flatf' should allow him to make ,it home -- or at least to ^service Station. This will eliminate the always - dangerous task of changing a tire on the side of the road. Most of the ideas tire manufacturers are experimenting with concern the styling of^a tire's sidewall. One of these also offers a distinct safety advantage -- a tire with a reflective sidewall stripe for nighttime visibility and safety. Unlike previous tires offering reflective sidewalls, this new tire would have the stripe mounted outside the curb rib, allowing it to be seen in the headlights. Another possible addition to tire sidewalls is a chrome stripe manufactured in various types of finishes -- glossy, brushed,. tooled, etc. A variation would be the incorporation colored tape with the metal in the stripe to give a "barber-pole" effect. This would allow the owner to carry his car's color scheme right down to pavement level. And if he got tired of the color (Hi the sidewall i it could be changed by merely replacing the stripe, which is a form of tape. The part of the tire that is really ugly (if you ever look at it) is the tread itself. There's an answer to that, too, accordding to a spokesman for the tire manufacturer. He said they're learning that many more attractive tread designs are just as safe as those now on the road - and that some of the designs now being tests appear to improve traction and safety. These designs are difficult to describe, except to say that they have a "sculptured" appearance, By comparison, current tread designs might be called "gaudy". Part of the reason for this concentration on tread design is that safety in the new wide and radial tires can be improved if the tread is "wrapped around" onto the sidewall. One thing is certain: With all this glamour on the sidewalls, the new - car tire-kickers will have to find a new target. SUNDAY S A StRMOH A BETTER LIFE It would be wonderful if we lived in a world that knew no evil. But such is not the way of life upon earth. There is no exception to the fact that w6 are all subject to some encounter with disaster and witfj unhappiness. How gratifying it would bfc to live in a world that was free from sin. Yet it shall never be. Evil persists, even as life does. You cannot buy a life as perfect as a rose. You cannot expect to abolish oppression, to eliminate want, to wipe out all sickness and disease. But, you can try. You can develop personal character. You can devote time and energy to the cause of all that is good., and worthwhile. You can meet responsibility with a will, adversity with determination, failure with renewed effort. You can work at it. You may accomplish no more than a trifle, but it will help. And if your efforts are multiplied by the efforts of others you have influenced in some way, then you make an even greater contribution to a better life upon earth: HALFI DON'T MEAN NOW LONG /S THIS COURSE. WiTH MY SUCE I MEAN HOW IWD£ fS /T ? A.
