We had no idea of how far we would get that day. On this route we saw some of the most beautiful sights, yet this highway for the most part is cut into the side of the mountains high above the blue Pacific.' This route took us through Castro Valley which is called the Artichoke center of the world. Field after fields of arti - chokes as far as you can see. Quite unusual. We had lunch on the wharf in Santa Cruz, the day was sunny and sparkling, which made the ocean drive more breathtaking. We thentook whatis known as "the Seventeen Mile drive" which took us past "Seal Rock" which was black with seals, and the unusual part of that was there were no seals on any of the other rocks around there. We passed Pebble Beach Country club and Golf Course which is widely known. Next came the city of Carmel that is very unusual in its unique floral ara Very Special Christmas Offer... rangements in the streets and lawns. PERILOUS DRIVE ' Hie mountain known as "Big Sur" then came into view and from then on for the next 85 miles the scene was one continuous nightmare of precipitous, cliffs, plunging in to the oceair thousands of feel below with the road clinging desperately onto the edge, wherever it couldgeta foothold. Going south we were on the ocean side, and if we have some additional grey hairs, it is no wonder. The state of California started to build this highway originally with prison labor, but they lost so many men in the process, it was abandoned and later finished by the Federal government. Our plans were to visit Sarr Simion which is on this route and is a fabulous Castle, whieh was built and owned by the Publisher William Randolph He-' arst, but we were unfortunate to find that the tours were riot Jemg made at this time. So we had to be content with viewing the grounds at a distance and reading the literature about it which we were able to buy at the entrance. By this time the day was well spent and we retired for the night in a nice motel in Santa Maria. More next time. :WHISPERS ABOUT FOLKS The Doremeyers of 4613 are busy making plans for their Son's wedding in January.
