Firemen On The Job FRIDAY, JAN. 31/ 1969 - PLAINDEAlER- PG. 15 Firemen hurry to different parts of the building on the Northern Pump-owned farm at McCullom Lake which sustained in excess of $10,000 fire damage early Wednesday morning. A steer housed in the building is believed to have knocked a heating unit from a tank, causing straw to spread the flames. PLAINDEALER PHOTO Scoot TROOP 41 Fifty-six Juniors from Valley View Neighborhood attended patrol leaders' training held recently at Zion Lutheran church by Cadettes from Troop 41 and Seniors from Troop 400. Linda Smith, Laura Smith, Alice Wilson, Debbie Schabow and Donna Humann from Troop 41 and Joann Schabow and Cathy Durkin from Troop 400 planned and executed the training course. Each of the girls attending signed in under their troop position, troop leader, assistant leader or member. After signing, they sang until the program began with a film strip pertaining to the duties of a patrol leader. When the film was over the girls went to their assigned groups where each girl received a sheet referring to the duties of the patrol leader and troop leader. We discussed these duties and also had to $earn skits or new songs. While the girls were in their groups the adult leaders were having their own session. First they saw the rest of the film which was shown to the girls. The leaders also discussed the duties of patrol leaders. This group was led by Mrs. Althoff, Junior consultant. By 2:30 the girls were ready to do their acts. First of all the patrol leaders demonstrated a perfect patrol meeting, then the assistants sang a song, "Swiftly Flowing Lake" which they just learned. The members had been split into groups, A-CandB-D. Group A-C demonstrated some real square dancing, which was very good. Group B-D held a troop meeting showing patrols at work. This skit ended the WATER-WELLS PUMPS I O RED JACKET THE BEST WATER SYSTEM IS THE CHEAPEST WATER WELL SUBMERSIBLE DRILLING PUMPS McHENRY COUNTY WELL & PUMP CO. 385-5252- Res. 385-0713 4913 W. Those of you who were there know its meaning but in case some of course and we know the girls are happy because they finished Requirement 8 in the Sign of the Arrow badge. This requirement consisted of getting together with another troop to meet new girls and do something together. Thanks to Mrs. Bieschke (Pepper) for helping out the older Scouts and to Mrs. Althoff, who was in charge of the ladies. The leaders who attended were Mrs. Brunow, Troop 320; Mrs. Emerson and Mrs. Kohl, Troop 436; Mrs. Mc- Mahon, Troop 190; and the new co-leader of Troop 88, Mrs. Worzala. Many thanks to the girls who came and cooperated with us. Troop 41 invited Troop 301 to go camping with them recently at Chapman Hills, East Troy, Wis. Eighteen girls and two leaders from Troop 41 were joined by three girls and one leader from Troop 301. The leaders in charge were Mrs. Smith (Salt), Mrs. Bieschke (Pepper), and Mrs. Burg (Snoopy). We arrived late in the afternoon at Chapman Hills. We went on hikes, gave demonstrations, worked on badges and cooked delicious meals. Saturday we had time to go outside, worked on challenges, had a talent show and sang songs. At dinner we had two birthday cakes to celebrate Cathy Adams' birthday. Sunday we went to church, served lunch and then cleaned up the lodge so that it would be ready for the next troop to use. Meet at the Methodist church at 10 a.m. Saturday morning in full winter regalia. Besides the required equipment needed for the campout, you will need to bring a potato, a carrot, an onion and a quarter. Mr. Hoak will take care of the meat. Even though there are no immediate plans to stay overnight, be sure to bring the required winter clothing knd other equipment. If you are not sure what equipment you should bring, be sure to check~with your patrol leader, Mr. Hoak, Mr. Schmidt or Kenny Betts before Saturday morning. Be Prepared. There will be an inspection before we leave and if you are not fully prepared/" you will not be allowed to go until you are. Fm sure you understand that this action is necessary for your own protection. It was First Aid night again last Monday, with Mr. Hodges presiding. These are always important but especially so before a campout. It you didn't get to attend the first aid class last Monday night, be sur"e to give yourself a break by checking with some of the Scouts who were there. y Finally, a Board of Review was also held last Monday night for Kevin Hoak. Kevin was trying for the rank of "Life." Being one of the members of the board, I can earnestly say that Kev was "raked over the coals" pretty good as the old saying goes, and he came through in the typical Scout tradition. Congratulations, Kevin! I know that big Marine brother of yours is watching your scouting career closely even though he is quite a distance from you. See you Saturday, gang. Noteboom, who said he was thrown from the car, had as passengers, Kevin HappofRidgemoore, Bob Heinz of Mundelein, both of whom were treated and released from the hospital. Noteboom was blamed by deputies for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident or too fast for conditions. Noteboom said he was driving west between 40 and 50 miles per hour when the car began to fishtail. He lost control and the auto crossed into the other lane and collided with the Chase station wagon. Mary Etian' of TowerLakes, Barrington, wast blamed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident which occurred south of Island Lake, at Roberts road. The driver suffered minor injuries when her car struck ice, slid sideways and travelled into a yard, knocking down fencing, shrubbery and small trees and then sideswiping a large tree.
