The Social Security office at 2500 Grand avenue, Waukegan, reminds McHenry county residents that it has representatives meeting people at two locations in McHenry county on a regular basis. The representatives are at the Woodstock Public library, 414 W. Judd, Woodstock every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon and at the Harvard city hall from 9:30 a.m. to noon on the first and third Tuesday every month. If you have a question you would like answered on Social Security in this column, please forward it to Social Security Administration Question and-,Answer Column, 2500 Grand avenue, Waukegan, Illinois, 60085. Give your full name, address, and Social Security number. If you do not want your name to appear, please indicate this and we will use only initials. Q.: I get social security retirement checks. My wife is almost 62 and will be applying for benefits on my social security record. Will this mean that my check will be less? A.: No0 the amount of your benefit check will remain the same. Your wife's benefit will be paid in addition to the payment you get. Q.: I have heard that anyone 72 or over can get social security even if he never worked or paid social security contributions. Is this correct? A.: Not quite. People who "reach 72 before 1968 can get these special payments even if they never worked under social security. People who reach 72 after 1967 need credit for some work under social security to get them. The special payments may be reduced if the person is receiving public assistance or other Government payments. Q.: At what age may a widow who has no children under 18 start receiving social security benefits on her deceased husband's record? A.: A widow who is not disabled may start her social security benefits at 60. A disabled widow may begin receiving benefits as early as 50 if she becomes disabled before her husband's death or within 7 years after his death. Also, a widow who receives benefits as a mother with children may receive payments if she becomes disabled before those payments end or within 7 years after they end. The full amount of a widow's benefit, payable at . 62, is 82^ percent of her deceased husband's retirement benefit. If she starts receiving benefits between 50 and 62, the amount is permanently reduced. CX.: What is meant by the "lump-sum death payment" and what is the~amount? A.: The lump7surh death payment is the pawnept-made after the death of an insured worker. The amount vajries\from $165 to $255, depenaing {on the worker's average yearly earnings under social security. The payment is made to the surviving spouse who was living with the deceased at the time of death. If no such spouse survives,, the payment is made to the person who paid the burial expenses. If the burial expenses have not been paid, the lump-sum payment can be paid directly to the funeral home upon authorization from the person who assumed responsibility for the expenses. Q.: My husband died 2 years ago. Since I was 62 at the time, I began receiving social security widow's payments. If I should remarry, would my monthly benefits stop? A.: No. Your remarriage would not stop your payments, but the --aiffount you get may change. You would receive whichever is larger: half the retirement benefit of your deceased husband, or benefits as the wife of your new husband. Q.: I have been working parttime for the past 3 years while receiving social security. Is it possible that my earnings from this job will increase my benefits? How do I apply- for the increase? A.: Your additional earnings may increase your benefit if they are higher than the average earnings on which your present benefits are based. You do not have to apply for the increase. The records of all beneficiaries who have had additional earnings are reviewed every year. If an increase is due, you will receive it automatically. Q.: My husband and I, both 25, work under social security. We have three young children. I understand that if my husband should die, the children could get social security benefits. If I should die, would the children receive anything? A.: Yes. If you have worked under social security for 1V2 years or more, your children could receive monthly benefits on your record. /FAMIIY POT IUCK •+0 On a slice of toast which has been spread with mayonnaise, arrange slices of tomato.
