Doctors, especially officers of the medical staff, were involved in discussions concerning expansion needs. " We spent the first f§w months in peaceful arbitration with Crystal Lake, Cary and Fox River Grove doctors concerning some kind of hospital unit that could develop into a large central hospital. "After this appeared too far in the distant future, it became evident to the medical staff, the board and the administrator that we should proceed with expansion plans at the present location in Woodstock." Fortunately, the board has considerable land at its West South street site for a new wing and more parking. Plans on a long-range basis--something jike 30 years--show a 240-bed hospital with an all-new East wing. Several floors could be built on this location without difficulty. Dr. Stahlecker said two new physicians joined the hospital staff in July. Another-Dr. Ruth Balkin-joined in October as a full-time pathologist. He said the intensive care unit should be in use later this month. Mrs. Jane Shoemaker, Woman's auxiliary president, said the women know this is "an important year ahead with expansion foremost in our minds" and added the women will strive to provide money toward the mammoth project. "We've set Oct. 1 as the date for Holiday Hospitality Day," she concluded. TTiis brought cheers since guests realized this is the auxiliary's biggest money^ maker--$8,300 last year! Two new directors joined the board: Mrs. Henry Mann, Woodstock and Richard Thompson, Greenwood. Retiring directors include John Laing and Mrs. Virgil Smith. Reelected directors included William Tittle and Mrs. Jane Shoemaker and Mrs. Dorothy Cooley, Woodstock; Charles Ridgway, Crystal Lake; Ludwig Kulvosek, Fox River Grove; Anton Grill, Wonder Lake; and Ralph Nichols, Hebron. A look at the 10,724 patient admissions shows that people from every corner of the county depend on Memorial Hospital for their health care. In addition, more than 400 were out of the county or out of state. Here's the breakdown: Woodstock, 6,880; McHenry 757; Wonder Lake, 558; Crystal Lake, 530; Cary and Fox River Grove, 493; Huntley, 180; Algonquin, 167; Marengo, 143; Harvard, 135; Hebron, 132; Richmond, 115; Ringwood, 82; Union, 65; Spring Grove, 19; Capron, 18; Hartland, 16; and Hampshire, <10.
