> I I Conference Wrestling Tourney This Weekend North Chicago Are Defending Champs By Paul Palmateer The McHenry Warriors will host the Varsity Wrestlings Tournament this Friday and Saturday Feb. 7 and 8. Past records show that many state finalist have participated in this main attraction* The most recent were McHenry's Jim Laursen;. Barrington's Mark Stevenson (state 120 champ); North Chicago's Phi; Parker (state1 127 champ), Wayne Ingram, John Johnson, Bob Davis;" and Greg Winston of Zion- Benton. The coaches feel that between ten and fifteen should make the state finals at Champaign Feb. 28 and March 1. The two day affair will begin with the quarter-finals Friday at 7 p.m. On Saturday the semifinals and wrestlebacks start • at 1 p.m. Saturday evening the " third place finals will be on two mats starting at 6:30 p.m.; then the championship matches to start around 8 p.m. The tournament is being directed by Len J. McCracken Athletic Director at McHenry High School. He stated that the tournament would be held at the new gym. The North Suburban is regarded as one of the top Wrestling Conferences in the state. This year the top wrestlers who should be seeded at their positions are as follows: 95 lb. Williams Crystal Lake 18-1 Odom Barrington 8-5 1031b. Mallory Crystal Lake 18-1 Pasiewiez No. Chicago 13-4 Sobacki McHenry 10-4 112 lb. Swopes No. Chicago 9-3 Justen McHenry 10-4 Schroeder Woodstock 120 lb. Pumula Zion 12-5 Glantz Barrington 6-3 The records also show that in the past North Chicago has been the Champion since they joined the conference in 1965. This year it looks like there will be no change. The Warhawks are unbeaten in their last nineteen dual matches. Last year the Warhawks were the State District and Sectional Champs along with placing eighth in the state finals. So, if it's top notch wrestling you like to see Friday and Saturday are the dates. My predictions see North Chicago to win the main trophy and six individual champions. MIKE MALLORY SCOTT WILLIAMS Crystal Lake's standouts during the *1969 season are Scott Williams at 95 lbs. with a record of 18 - 1 and Mike Mallory at 103 lbs. with a record of 17 - 1. He was 3rd in the Grant t Christmas tournament < and 3rd in the Kenosla Invitational/ Scots Bow To Wheaton;DePaul Frosh Coming The McHenry County college fighting Scots put up a good fight but failed to win this past Thursday evening at the Crystal Lake Fieldhouse. The final score, Wheaton Junior Varsity 78 - McHenry 65, fails to tell the real story as the Scots battled all the way. Once again, the failure to hit the basket was the deciding factor as McHenry could connect on wily 26 of 84 attempts from the field for a cool 31% shooting average. Down by 10 points 40 to 30 at the half, the local county 5 battled back to within 2 points several times but couldn't close the gap. Again it was the same story in the closing minutes as the Wheaton Crusaders finished the game with a flury of baskets and free throws. Henry Lamkinand Ron Taylor led the McHenry offense with 31 and 15 points respectively. Next "home" game for the Scots will be Thursday, Feb. 13 when the DePaul frosh will be the guests. "Home" will be Marian Central gymnasium and game time will be 7:30 p.m. McHENRY COUNTY COLLEGE v.s. WHEATON" COLLEGE .JR. Earl Walsh SO I HEAR Sports Editor .J Dug up a man-size hat with a wide brim and wouldn't you know somebody would make fun of it. "Where did you get that hat?", asked Tom Bolger. (Wouldn't tell him. He might want to get one.) As Georgie Gobel might say -- you don't hardly see those kind no more. Tom insists John Wayne has one just like it. One of McHenry's great out-' door men, Don Blake, has had his troubles of late. First, he entered the fishing contest at Antioch and didn't catch a fish -- let alone catching a prize number. Next, Don went rabbit hunting, climbed a tree to get a shot at the bunny, then fell out of the tree. (Cost him 40 bucks for X-rays). All we know is what we hear. There's big news to-night! McHenry High's varsity basketball team beat Dundee in a real squeaker. We attended the McHenry Hospital Annual Meeting Saturday night. Had a real good time, but missed that basketball winner. Better not miss any more. If sports fans don't know about the conference wrestling tournament here this week, it isn't because we haven't spread it over our sports, pages. Wayne Gaylord has been getting the pictures, Paul Palmateer has been doing the reporting, Coach "Hutch" has been keeping in touch, and "Mac" is making sure. While all these winter sports are swinging into high gear, the Shamrock baseball team is making plans for the coming season. Days are getting longer and the sunshine is coming through. Waukegan East Host To G.A.A. Boards By Pat Morrison Victories have been as scarce as hens' teeth this season and last for our Warrior five. It hasn't been easy for the coaching staff or players, but to their credit they have stayed in the fight. Our idea all along is that we need one tall man, but that hasn't been the whole problem. We haven't had the big point makers. Fortunately we have good team effort with every man giving it a great try. Harbecke 0 0 4 0 Joan Farr, Shirley Jenkins, Gehrke 3 0 2 6 and Pat Morrison, G. A. A. Sophomores Split Weekend Tilts By Bert Hagemann The McHenry sophomore team ran its record to 6-7 this past weekend as they were beaten by North Chicago 47-38, on Friday, and then edged Dundee 38-36 on Saturday night. Bruce Harbecke led the Warrior scoring in the win over the Cards with 18 points and a team leading total of 17 rebounds. He was aided on the boards by teammates Hosier and Gerke with 12 and 8 rebounds respectively. The little Warriors, under the tutelage of Bill Blankenhorn, hope to even their record this week against the Blue Streaks at Woodstock. Why not try and make the sophomore game and see the varsity Warriors of the next two years to come? NORTH CHICAGO edlam Reigns In Buckner Gym As Warriors Edge Cards 44 To 42 In Last Two Seconds Of Frantic Play The struggling Warriors won their first conference game in two years Saturday night on their home hardwood by the narrow margin of 44-42 over the high flying Cardunals of Dundee. The margin of victory came on a 20 foot jumper by junior forward Mike Weingart with just four seconds remaining on the clock. A frantic three-quarter court attempt by the Cards fell short as the buzzer sounded, and king bedlam reigned in Buckner gym for the first time in its history. The contest started out like no contest at all. McHenry went six minutes without a point to start the game, finally counting on a 30 foot jumper by Mark Camasta. The grand total of four points garnered in the first quarter led many seasoned observers to believe that this was goingtobe another one of those things. However, the infusion of juniors Kurt Knaack and Mike Weingart into the lineup triggered the offense enough so that the orange ahd Jbla^fiVere in arrears by only a bucket at half time. The lead see-sawed back and forth throughout' the second half as both ball control minded clubs worked for their shot. Don Reinboldt's nine points in the third quarter helped the Warriors to a lead which they relinquished in the fourth quarter however, due to some fine outside shooting by the Cards. Kurt Knaack brought the orange and black into a tie with a free-throw late in the last stanza, and after a missed Dundee attempt, all was set for Weingart's Merriwell heroics. The win was certainly a big one for coach Ken Ludwig and his TEAM. Contributions by the bench made a world of difference in this contest, and raises hopes that perhaps the Warriors can give the league leading Streaks of Woodstock something to think about this coming Friday night on their turf.
