ELECTRIC WEEK The electric industry and its three million employees will observe National Electric Week this year from Feb. 9-15, according to John Eilering, vice-president of Commonwealth Edison company. Commonwealth Edison is the local sponsor of the nationwide event which commemorates the birthday of Thomas Alva Edison and the subsequent accomplishments of the industry he founded. Edison was born almost 122 years ago on February 11, 1847. GIFT TO COLLEGE The efforts of Robert Hoover of Crystal Lake and William Brda of McHenry were responsible for securing the donation of five filing cabinets for McHenry County college, each valued at approximately $200. Mr. Brda is presently enrolled in one of the college's data processing courses. The cabinets were given to the college by the advertising firm of Needham, Harper & Steers, Chicago. SERVICE NEWS Army Specialist Five Cory A. Patterson, son of Mr. and Mrs. William N. Patterson, 1421 W. Lakeview, McHenry, is participating in Exercise ACID TEST 1/ PUNCH CARD V, as a gunner in the 172nd Infantry Brigade (Mechanized). Major units of the U. S. Army, Alaska and Alaskan Air Command Forces, plus Air National Guard units from several other states, are engaged in the mock battle operation which began Jan. 29 and will continue through Feb. 13. The largest training exercise to be held in Alaska in two years is being conducted in the Army's maneuver area near °Ft. Wainwright. It is designed to test the effectiveness of combat troops operating inthe arctic environment. Under near-combat conditions, pitting "friendly forces" against "aggressors," the ground soldiers are demonstrating their fighting efficiency in a region where winter temperatures sometimes reach more than 60 degrees below zero. Marine Corporal James A. Gehri, son of Mrs. Roy O. Lee of 2802 N. Manitou Trail, McHenry, is serving at the Chu Lai Marine Air Base in Vietnam with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 323. The squadron, a unit oC the First Marine Aircraft Wing, flies the F-4B Phantom jet. Capable of supersonic speeds, the Phantom can assume the role of a ground-air attack aircraft, and can intercept and destroy enemy aircraft under all weather conditions.
