Earl Walsh SO I HEAR Sports Editor .J McHenry County College Five To Play Final Game Saturday Coach Ludwig's viarsity basketball team won another game. That's news -- and good news. The best part of the win over Crystal Lake was the fact that the Warriors fought back from a sad first half to forge ahead for the victory. Teams with less heart might have folded. The Warriors lived 15) to their name. JV basketball fans were also real happy about the team winning from Crystal Lake. Some days things go right. two weeks before the opening of school next fall, when he will teach physical education half time, and spend the rest of the day,, in administrative duties. Mr. Rooney's wife is the former Margaret Freund, daughter of Mrs. A.P. Freund of McHenry. They have three childred, Dan, Steve and Ann. Their home is at 430 E. Broadway in Crystal Lake. Word comes in that the McHenry Junior High Basketball team has a great record. We hope to get the full story this week. All this talk about pinch hitters for the pitchers makes us wonder. Now, who would you send up to hit for Gary Peters or Don Drysdale? Speeding up the game maybe in order, but we still want time to eat our peanuts and popcorn. Here is a little note from Anna Frisby which landed in this corner. Many of McHenry*s young people know the Rooneys: Marvin Rooney of Crystal Lake, who now serves as head basketball and baseball coach in addition to teaching physical education at Cary-Grove school was appointed part-time assistant principal at a recent meeting of School District 155. He will take over his new duties From where we sit, we can see some birds building a nest. Seems like they are rushing the season unless they know something that we don't know. The McHenry County College Fighting Scots will close out their first basketball season this Saturday evening, Feb. 22, as they battle Crane Junior college on the Cary-Grove High School floor at 7:30 p.m. This past Thursday the Scots took a bad beating from a fine DePaul freshman team 94 to 56. In the DePaul game the local five made their first three shots to jump to a 6 to 0 lead, but the lead was short lived. DePaul bounced back to take the lead 9 to 8 and never relinquished it again. By half time the score was 48 to 33 and the Blue Demons were begin ning to pull away. Henry Lamkin, Ron Taylor and Jim Mach led the McHenry scoring with 18, 14 and 13 points respectively but it just wasn't enough. The McHenry crew shot a cool 26 percent from the field which was no match for the DePaul crew. De Paul now owns an impressive 18-4 record including a victory over Notre Dame. Harry Shields former standout from Crystal Lake high returned home with a five 14 point performance to lead the Blue Demons. FEB. 19, 1969 Warriors Tame Tigers 59-53 By Bert Hagemann The ever struggling Warriors turned a near disaster into their second conference win of the season (59-53) this past Friday evening on the home hardwood. The Tigers of Crystal Lake were the victims of a near miraculous comeback by the Warriors. Trailing by 13 points at halftime, the orange and black burned the strings for a 45 percent shooting average in the second half as they stormed back from a miserable first half. The first two stanzas of the game saw the Warriors fumble stumble and stagger to the tune of 13 turnovers and a 25 percent shooting average. The whole ball club looked unusually inept against the large Tiger zone defense, and coach Ken Ludwig swept the bench looking for help, but none could be found. However, something must have happened during the half time break, because McHenry came out loaded for Tiger in the third quarter. Using a 1-3-1 zone defense for the first time in ages, and employing a full court press, the Tigers saw their lead dissipate into nothingness by the opening minute of the fourth period. The Tigers turned the ball over repeatedly throughout the second half, and McHenry took advantage of these mistakes to scorch the nets for 20 points in the final quarter. Gary Fairchild's 17 rebounds for the game, and 11 points in the last period cinched the big win for McHenry as Mark Camasta consistently set up his teammates and Mike Weingart and Don Reinboldt did yeoman work underneath. Although senior Bob Allyn tallied 25 points for the Tigers, it was not enough on what was to be another Warrior night.
