( • Wildcats Wallop Warriors In Last Home Game, 55-42 LAST GAME OF THE SEASON -- A large crowd turned out for Parent Night and the last home game of the season only to watch our Warriors go down in defeat. The scoreboard shows 26 seconds remaining in the first quarter as the Warriors trail 12-4 during this jumpball action. PLAINDEALER PHOTO Earl Walsh SO I HEAR Sports Editor Registration Information For Swimming Instruction It was out to West Campus and the beautiful new gym Friday night for the last home game of the season for our basketball Warriors. „ Sorry to sayk it wasn't much of a basketball game. The Warriors played hard, but couldn't hit the hoop. What's more -- the Wildcats of Libertyville didn't show the class one might expect from a first place team. They must be better than they showed on Friday night. The visitors had that one tall man we need. And they had a couple of other good boys under the boards. What the Wildcats did was move back into a zone defense every time we had the ball. That zone seemed to tighten around the basket in the last half when ther e seemed to be no threat of outside shooting on the part of the Warriors. The new gym is certainly better than the old one, but some things are the same. LIKE It was too hot in there. The boards are just as hard to sit on. Cheerleaders are just as cute. "Mac" was there. Coaches, players and fans thought the officials were wrong on occasions. That same gal (What's her name?) greeted us at the ticket door with a smile that made us think we were walking on a welcome mat. (Where was that gal when we left? We needed a smile). As we ambled along the walk to our car, we heard a young lad holler something from a parked car. Didn't Understand what he said so wcNstopped. Turned out he was jC Cub fan and had a whole car load of Cub fans. There was Papa Bear, Mama Bear and a car full of young cubs. We asked if they were all Cub fans. You betch! Going over to the Valley Hi home in Hartland last week with nine other Rotarians was an experience to remember. The group brought prizes, ice cream, cake and all sorts of good things to these elderly people, but what meant most was the fact that they went to see these old folks and visit with them. One woman chose a man's handkerchief as a prize and explained that she was going to give" it to her son when he came to see her. Later she wanted to give it to us for "helping" her. We assuredher how pleased her son would be that she thought of him. These old people are well cared for, but need to be remembered. They like visitors. There is so much talk of doing for our young folks. Let's not forget the old folks. Mrs. Dave Kent is a White Sox fan. She told us so. It seems Larry Huck, Sr. put her on the right sports trail when she was a mere child. "Is that the hat they make fun of ?" asked Mrs. Frank feomeb.^ * ' V"1 That" was the"one. "Well, it's a nice hat and it looks nice on you", said our friend. So there, Tom Bolger! And all the rest of you smart guys. Len Gerhke enjoyed one of his better nightSi as he dumped in 17 points and added a game high 14 rebounds. The loss can be attributed probably to a pair of factors. First of all, McHenry could not find the basket, as evidenced by a four point first quarter, and a 28 percent field goal average for the game. Coqple this poor shooting with an inability to keep the very large Cats off the glass and you have a loss, plain and simple. McHenry*s man to man defense could not contain Libertyville's talented 6*7" center, Schaper, as he dumped in 29 points. Pranke, the muscular forward, contributed few points to the winners cause, but his real value came on the boards as he rebounded fiercly at both ends of the hardwood. Actually the score was not as close as indicated, for McHenry fell steadily behind in the game and were actually behind by 20 points at one point in the contest. The Warriors saw some man to man defense for a change, but to no avail as every time someone drove the lane, the outstretched hand of Schaper was there to knock the ball Zee-Bees Defeat Warriors, 72-66 by Bert Hagemann Last Saturday night the orange and black suffered another defeat, this time at the hands of the strong quintet from Zion. The Zee Bees were led by itteii- tine junior ball handler Czopiwsky, who notched 28 tallies as he scored almost at will against various defensive maneuvers. Actually the Warriors played a pretty fair ball game, but after falling behind early in the contest, it was a matter of trading buckets but never being able to quite catch up. The maroon clad lake fronters employed two full teams in an attempt to run the Warriors out of the gym, but although their fine fast break worked well, McHenry hung in doggedly till the bitter end. Mike Morenz ended his scoring siesta with an 18 point effort, and Gary Fairchild chipped in with 16 tallies against a defense that verged on the strange quite often. The orange and black missed numerous cripples, and of the 56 fouls whistled in the contest, the Warriors managed to miss 15 charity tosses. Neither team shot that great from the floor, and turnovers and rebounds were about even. The tale of this game can be told in an early lead which was never relinquished. This Zee Bee contingent is almost entirely a junior ball club, and as they are nestled right behind the conference leaders at present, watch out for them next year, they should be awfully tough to handle. We play the Broncos in their corral this Friday night in the conference finale, if you can't make it, I hope you have your regional ducat to watch the Warriors do battle with the state ranked Maroons of Elgin. 6'7" Schaper who gave our Warriors a rough night. Every bit of snow deposited on your garden during the winter is worth hard cash to you. Falling snow brings down with it nitrogen from the air and deposits it on your soil. Since this is the element most used by plants . for growth, you're lucky it snows. Bottom heat, so necessary for quick starting of certain seeds, is newly available in form of an electrically heated mat, resembling a heating pad, but sturdier in construction; tougher in covering. It is used under pots, flats or whatever container you arc using for seed 'starting. Thermostatic controls can be connected to the mat if desired. Too seldom seen are the annual mallows or Lavateras. Their pink flowers look like those of single hollyhocks. Seeds can be sown outdoors where the plants are to blooni. ENDS THURS. FEB. 27 SUBJECT WAS ROSES McHENRY, I I ' 3C5-014 STARTS FRI.
