A few simple steps are all that's needed. NEW YORK (a) -- The more than one million Americans who own aluminum boats soon will be proving the convenience of the metal when they get their craft ready for the boating season. A few simple steps are all that is required at fitting-out time to get an aluminum boat ready for use. For the unpainted aluminum boat, a scouring with a household detergent cleanser and perhaps an abrasive pad for the tough spots will do the job. Hose or splash down the boat first, then scour and rinse thoroughly. This will remove the natural grey film and leave a bright, shiny' surface! This film is normal oxidation that actually protects the metal from corrosion. Anti-Fouling Paint Boats that are kept in salt water can have an anti-fouling paint applied from the waterline down to prevent growth of barnacles and marine plants. Only anti-fouling paints containing an organotin base are recommended. _ To prepare an aluminum bottom for anti-fouling paint, remove the old paint, then wash the area with a household detergent, rinse thoroughly, dry and roughen the surface with medium coarse emery cloth- or an acid-etching cleaner. On the clean, dry, dust-free bottom, spray or brush on a wash primer. When this has dried, the paint can be plied. Unlike some other antifouling paints, organotin compounds can be" applied months in advance of launching. They will not lose their high toxicity and it is not necessary that they remain wet for a boat to be launched. To repaint an aluminum boat, first remove the old From The Farm Adviser Desk GROWING AFRICAN VIOLETS Ask any housewife to name her favorite house plant and the chances are she will cite the African Violet. Perhaps the reason for this intense interest in this one flower is that they respond so well to artificial light. Growing violets under artificial light opens up many new possibilities for plant enthusiasts. In fact, the results of growing plants under lights are often superior to that of daylight because allowances can be made for the varying light requirements of different variepaint. Then apply the wash primer or a^ conversion .coating and finisfir with a -quality, marine paint. If there are1 any dents from last season, they can be tapped out easily with a rubber mallet and a bucking board. Start from the outside of the dent and work toward the center in a circular motion. -ties of violets. The first thing that a hobbyist should realize when growing plants under artificial light is that supposedly white light is made 19 of many colors ranging from the long, warm, red rays to the cool, blue rays. WJiite light that has a larger amount of the warm or red rays stimulates blooming in African Violets and encourages growth in height. Bluish or cool, white light does riot encourage blooming but produces rather strong, heavy, dark leaves. In many cases the bluish or cool type fluorescent is the preferred type of light for propagating new plants when it is desired to encourage early blooming. White light, which has a large amount of blue/ tends to produce short stocky plants. Sunlamps will kill plants. Do not ytise them on plants. The easiest way to achieve proper color of light is by the use of fluorescent tubes. It is possible to obtain the tubes in either warm, cool or daylight colors. Daylight tubes should be considered a cool type, heavy in blue rays. For reasons of economy, as far as fixtures are WED. FEB. 26, 1969 - PLA NDEALER - PG. 7 concerned, you may want to use light fixtures that accept the large economical - to- operate, 40-Watt fluorescent types. Either one of two tube units can be used. For more details on growing African Violets - call or write the Cooperative Extension Service, Box 431, Woodstock, 111. 60098, and ask for Circular 942.
