T)he %V Who says ydu're Discuss the delusion which Doris holds regarding her parents, for you will find a sur-. prising number of teen-agers who are also victims of this widespread phantasy. It is a common device for putting parents in their place and thus trying to get even! Let all teen-agers measure their emotional maturity via the test below. By - George W. Crane, Ph.D., M.D. STEPPING UP IN THE WORLD J -CASE- J-531-Doris 1?., 13, is unusually hostile to her parents. "Dr. Crane," her worried mother began, "Doris alternates between pouting or angrily refusing to obey her daddy and me. "Sometimes .she just ignores us and seems to be daydreaming. "At other times, she actually goes out of her way to oppose us and disregard our wishes. "Is this just the usual teenager's attempt to be independent?" FOSTER CHILD PHANTASY Even at the age of 2 or 3 years, many a child will indicate its attempt to be independent. "No, No," it will o?ten reply to questions, just on general principles, even though it might actually like the things suggested. "Jimmy/' you may thus ask such a toddler, "do you want a banana?" "No!" may be the belligerent answer of the toddler, though he is very fond of bananas. But in the early teens, another factor is often added to this usual self-assertive tendency. For dreamy teen-agers, often develop what we call the "Foster Child Phantasy." • "These aren't my REAL parents," a girl like Doris may imagine. "They must have adopted me, for they are mean to me and make me do things I don't like. "So my real father was probably a movie star or a prince or some other member of a European royal family." When I had an interview with Doris, she later admitted that she felt sure she must be an adopted daughter. And she also conjured up a fanciful dream that her real parents were probably some famous people. _ * - jn' Tact, when I was* teaching-* Child Psychology courses at Northwestern university, a married woman, Jaged 28, was in the class. She had two youngsters of the toddler age. - "But, Dr. Crane," she rue- FRI. FEB. 28, 1969 - PLAINDEALER - PG. 13 fully confessed when I had exposed this "Foster Child Phantasy" in my lecture, "I have held this very same notion about my parents ever since I was a teen-ager. "Indeed, I still imagined I was the child of some famous movie star until you demolished my egotistical dream a few minutes ago! "So I have done my parents an injustice all these years. "I never knew that this secret 'Foster Child Phantasy' was so widespread that you psychologists actually had a name for it!" Actually, this phantasy is a subconscious attempt to "pat one's self on the back," and also slap down one's parents. It is a cousin to the selfpity mechanism, for the victim of this phantasy is like the little boy jwho feels he will 'icrush" his mother's ego by telling her he is going to rjpt away from her. >£ In the "Foster Child Phantasy" the teen-ager thus tri»8> to push his parents away and- "demote" them from the tdjjC spot in the child's affectioftj^ It's much like the toddler*-C^--' statement, "I hate you£> Mother!" For such a child doesn't tag®: his mother but at the moment* he wishes to devastate hef^ ego and make her protest mor<£- ardent affections. A teen-ager simply takes ^ more passive form of resist tance and thus conjures up the" "Foster Child Phantasy." i> Discuss these cases in High School or Sunday School, a6d: send for the "Behavior Tesjs; for Teen-Ager," enclosing-^ longstamped, return envelope/ plus 20 cents. ^ 'DADDY LONG LEGS* stilts promise hiph times ahead for these young ladies. Your mother means well. But when your doctor says you're healthy, you can be sure. Help yourself with a checkup. And others with a check. American Cancer Society How Can I? Q. The only thing wrong with my electric clothes dryer is that my laundry lacks that fresh clean, outdoor aroma it formerly acquired when hung outof- doors. Any suggestions? A. If you'll place your basketfull of wash outdoors for an hour or so before ironing (summer and winter) , you'll achieve that familiar smell of yesteryear. Q. How can I improvise a colander in my kitchen? A. Press aluminum foil over the top of a bowl, secure it with rubber band, then punch holes through it with an ice pick. This works fine, even for draining such things as spaghetti. Q. How can I clean out the holes in the bottom of my steam iron? A. An excellent gadget for this is an ordinary pipe cleaner dipped0 in a solution of deter- - gent and water. Many other such handy tips are included in my household manual. Q. How can I mend a cracked laundry tub? A. Procure waterproof paste of glue, and completely coat a piece of cotton cord with this, then pack this cotton cord tightly into the crack in your tub with a knife. Usually makes a good seal. Q. How can I remove blood from a cushion or other hardto- clean object? A. Cover immediately with a paste of cornstarch and water, rubbing it on, then putting the cusion in the sun to dry. The sun draws the blood out into the cornstarch. Brush off the dry cornstarch, and if the spot is not completely gone, repeat the routine. Is there an easy way to remove the white membrane from an orange? A. Before peeling the orange, soak in boiling water for about five minutes, and those stringy membranes will then slide off with the peeling. Q. How can I easily stain an unfinished picture frame? A. You can do a good job of staining with paste shoe polish. Let this dry as you would your shoes, then shine with a soft cloth. Q. How can I deal with two drinking glasses that have become tightly stuck one inside the other? A. Don't try to force them apart. Instead fill the inside glass with cold water (for contraction) and dip the outside glass in hot water (for expansion). The two glasses will then usually come apart without strain or breakage. Q. How can I soften up a stiffened chamois? A. If you'll soak the chamois in warm water to which a spoonful of olive oil has been added, the chamois will emerge from this as soft and clean as when new. Q. How can I treat candles used only for decorative purposes against drooping? A. By giving them a coating of shellac. Q. How can I keep the corners of picture frames from scratching painted or papered walls against which they are hung?" A. Try pushing a thumb tack into the back of the two lower corners of the frame. The smooth heads of the tacks will slide easily, leaving no marks on the wall when the picture is shifted for dusting. Q. How can I make a good temporary repair on a leaky waterpipe? A. By covering the leak with plenty of black friction tape. Or. clamp a split section of garden hose over the source of the leak. Q. How can I make wallpaper washable? A. One often-successful way to do this is first to go over the paper with sizing, then with a clear shellac. A damp cloth will clean it easily thereafter. Q'. How can I insure maximum service from a new, natural- bristle paintbrush? A. By breaking it in properly. Suspend it for 24 hours in raw linseed oil so that the bristles are fully covered, but do not touch the bottom of the container. Then squeeze out the surplus oil, rinse in turpentine, and spin dry before using. Q. How can I iron men's ties without leaving marks of seams? A. Cut a piece of cardboard the shape of the necktie, slip it inside the tie, cover with a cloth, and press. This will usually insure a smooth job. Q. How can 'I remove crayon marks from vinyl tile flooring? A. Very easily with silver polish. Many other such hints on the removal of spots and stains of all kinds are contained in my household manual. Q. How can I prevent my steam iron from leaving a mark over basting threads? A. By using SILK thread. Q. How can I prevent dark clothes from streaking when I starch them? A. Try adding a little liquid coffee to your starch. When selecting a gift for [ him. ... let us help! 5TORE f o r MEN 1245 N. Green St., McHenry, 111.
