Pearl McHenry By - George W. Crane, Ph. D., M.D. CASE J-538: Percy J., aged 24, was discouraged. He and a pal had applied for a job at Sears Roebuck's Chicago plant. "Dr. Crane," Percy began, "I went in firstf for my interview but the boss told me no jobs were open. " Yet my pal walked in right after me and he landed a good job. "So what made the boss tell me there were no jobs?" PERSONNEL PSYCHOLOGY Employment managers and personnel directors are looking for good workers for current jobs. But they don't consider it their duty to offer unsolicited advice or personal counseling to those applicants whom they deem unfit. What that Sears Roebuck interviewer meant when he told Percy there were no jobs open, was this: "We have no jobs available -- for YOU!" For Percy had sideburns and an unkempt beard. He looked like a "hippie." And he wasn't dressed in a business suit nor did he wear a fie. So he created a ridiculous appearance for any employee in a modern business office. Employers doubly resent such lack of gumption, for they have a disdainful attitude toward hippies even in a hippie hangout. But when a hippie leaves his typical locale and thinks he can barge into an efficient modern business office, that very fact labels him as very immature and lacking in "horse sense." Young people who want to feel grownup, must learn how to think and act like adults. A business office is no place for a kindergarten tot nor a juvenile teen-ager. We have a basic rule in psychology called L-A-W. Those 3 letters stand for "Looks," "Actions" and " Words." All 3 must harmonize or you are not likely to get anywhere in life. If you look like a hippie, even though you act like a business worker, a false note is struck, so employers grow suspicious. Same goes for your vocabulary, for a man who dresses in good taste but uses vulgarity, profanity, slang or poor grammar, will offset the "L" and the "A" of that vital formula. Moreover, employers don't "give" you a job any more than a teacher "gives" you an "A" grade in high school or college. Instead, you must have enough leverage to pry loose that "A" as well as the job. And what do you teen-agers have to offer an employer that will justify his squandering $10 per day or more on your salary?
