How to Soften Up Water Problems Ask any homemaker. Coping with hard water means hard work. It also costs money, the Water Conditioning Foundation points out. Here's why: 1. The life of clothing and linens subjected to hard-water laundering is shortened. 2. Homemakers must use more soap to do dishes, laundry or cleaning. Even then, dishes are likely to have a film, and clothes and floors an off-color look. Soap, water and the cost of heating the water all drain dollars from the budget. 3. Hard water leaves a scaly deposit in pipe and waterusing equipment, shortening the useful life of such equipment. About 85 per cent of the country has water hard enough to require treatment. Many families use a softening agent in washing machine or to do the dishes, but the real solution is an automatic water softener that conditions water before it enters the piping system, says the Foundation. In the modern unit, the water flows through a tank where a chemical removes the hardening minerals. As the chemical becomes saturated, it's automatically regenerated. The equipment is easy to install and is virtually maintenance- free. Equipment is also available for other water problems such as excessive acid or sulphur. To solve water problems, consult a water-conditioning dealer, the Foundation suggests. Plumbing Troubles? If plumbing pipes are so clogged that water flows from faucets in a mere trickle, it isn't necessary to replace the pipes in order to get a good flow. It can be done by installing a water softener. Softened water flowing through the pipes will gradually absorb the hard mineral deposits that are clogging them and restore the pipes to near their original Culligan Water Institute. It can also correct plumbing noises, such as whistling and hammering, which are often caused by clogged pipes, efficiency, according to the Not enough hot water? Fuel bills too high? A water heater choked with scale may be the cause. Minerals deposited on tank walls and in heater coils act as insulation. Thermostats have to be turned up to get enough hot water. It's a vicious cycle. The higher heat is turned up, the faster minerals are deposited and the less hot water produced. Again, installation of water softening equipment will gradually restore the heater to near-new efficiency by reabsorbing the deposited minerals. ' Does water stain wash basins and other fixtures with rust? Does it corrode pipes and fittings and leave green stains? These problems may be caused by iron or sulphur, or water that is acid. All are correctable with appropriate water conditioning equipment. One new kind of conditioner can correct all of water's major problems with a single unit. Formerly, it took two or more units to do the job, so this represents a substantial saving. Another important water softener improvement is a device called an "Aqua Sensor.". Just as a thermostat detects the need for heat, this device detects the need for softened water and insures an unfailing supply. If plumbing can benefit from an improved water supply, homeowners don't necessarily have to buy equipment. Usually it is available for a low monthly rental fee. Dealers are listed in the Yellow Pages. The average family spends a lower percentage on total income now for food, clothing, furniture, etc, than it did 10 years ago, and a higher percent on medical care, travel, college, and recreation.
