How come you didn't go to see the Sox, Torch? You went the wrong way. Proviso East played their own game all the way and came through as real champions.- It takes a good, cool team to win the squeakers. With low scores and all control, many fans did not get the thrills that comes from a run and shoot game. Defense played a big part in tFfe outcome of games. Because of close calls on fouls, there' was a time when we preached that a good offense was the best defense in basketball. Coaches do not agree with the theorv. Saw a half dollar the other day. Seems to be a rare item. In fact, we never see an old coin of any.kind these days. Saved up a batch of old coins for one of our dear nieces one time and found they were worthless as collector items. Remind somebody to drag out the snow shovel. Buy a pair of rubbers. Saturday races include competition in the gas injected dragsters and the gas coupe and sedan divisions. Sundays featured cars are the nitro fuel injected dragsters, nitro fuel super charged coupes and the supercharged gas dragsters. All classes of stock cars including super stocks, modified stocks, sports cars and motorcycles will also compete both days. Saturdays races start at 3 p.m. with Sunday's program set for 2 p.m. The Great Lakes Dragaway is located 20 miles south of Milwaukee at Union Grove, Wisconsin. McHENRY G. A. A. HOLDS BASKETBALL SHOOTING CONTEST by Pat Morrison Last Wednesday, March 19, Girls Athletic association sponsored a basketball shooting contest. The object of the contest was to shoot from eight different areas on the court. The girls had twenty-four tries to make all eight baskets. The winner of the contest was Debbie Stepanovic. Runners up were Pat Morrison, Linda Brown, Rose Adams, Bonnie Buss, Pam Shaefer, Diane Marinich, Shirley Jenkins, Kathy Durkin, and Jackie Whitney. These names were sent to the state office. Tuesday, April 29, Elgin at McHenry. by Bert Hagemann As promised last week, here is a look at the baseball team as we enter our final week of preparation before our opening contest April 5 with Lake Zurich. We have been fortunate enough to get outside many different times, and have had two "sort oP' intra-squad contests. Surprisingly enough we will still be basically a junior ball club, although we are strong in veterans through the middle. Behind the plate we arfc experiencing a real dog-fight as seniors Jerry Freund, Phil Owen, and junior Don Thurwell are vying for the starting job. All are doing an acceptable job defensively, and none is a weakling with the lumber, so we still have that position up for grabs. Tom Janik and Mike Freund lead the mound staff at present, but our depth shows up in the fact that we have Don Reinboldt, Steve Thompson, Mike Carlson, lefty Scott Nickels, and submariner Steve Salter all in contention for a lot of work. The middle of the infield is set with three year lettermen Mike Janik and Mark Camasta holding forth, but the two corners are places where a lot of competition is going on. First could see Steve Rohrer or John Smith, or possibly Larry Cristy holding forth, although the incumbent Don Reinboldt could also end up there when not hurling. Third base poses a problem as the candidates there have shown equal ability so far. Tom Hurckes, Ed Todd, and Steve George are all scrapping for the starting berth, and the decision there is yet to be madie. The outfield also poses a pleasantly competitive problem as Gary Fairchild, Larry "wheels" Miller, Terry Fluger, Don Smith, or Judd Decker could find a spot. The outfield will hopefully be manned by whoever is swinging the hot bat, and perhaps some of the infield candidates will find a spot out there if they show enough talent at the plate. Actually right now only a couple of positions are set, but after the practices this week I should have a pretty good idea of who will fit where. If we are fortunate to get in the scheduled six non-conference games over Easter vacation we can go into North Suburban competition with a good idea of what our personnel can do. YMCA SCHEDULES GOLF INSTRUCTION CLASSES SOON The Lake Region YMCA has scheduled its annual series of golf instruction classes for adults and teens who would like to get a head start on summer activities. Classes for both adults and teens, grades 7-12, begin on Wednesday, April 16, and continue until June 4. All teen classes will be held at Dave's Sport Store, 67 N. Williams Street, Crystal Lake. The adult classes will meet at Dave's for the April 16 and 23 sessions, and the remaining 6 sessions will be conducted at the Crystal Woods Golf course on Route 47 just south of Route 176. The teen class meets at.. Dave's Sport Store from 5:15 to 6:00 p.m. and the class is limited to the first six persons who register. If sufficient interest is shown, there is a possibility of scheduling additional classes. The adult classes are scheduled for 6:30 to 7:15 and 8:00 to 8:45 p.m. They are also limited to the first six persons in each class. Mr. Roy Hunter, a professional golfer, is the instructor for both the adult and teen classes. Participants are asked to bring their own golf clubs.
