That's the situation a few hundred thousand fishermen in northern Illinois and Indiana, southern Wisconsin and Michigan are anticipating sometime during April, 1969. With dreams of the fast and furious action of Spring, 1968, still fresh in our minds, a lot of us arc already putting our tackle boxes in order. With a little square of emery cloth, we're cleaning and sharpening our hooks. Hopefully, we're also taking sto<;k of those shiny artificials, that are most likely to take Lake Michigan's new est, most exciting "tiger": the coho salmon. Last year, I wrote about three of the sure-fire coho lures ---the Silrcr Minnou . Sprite and "I.uchy" Lujon. And I've got to admit that at the time my w o r d s w e r e w r i t t e n , I hadn't set any weight or length records. In fact, the whole sea son went by without a real "brngger" coming to net Hut 1 didn't mind -- I was too busy h a u l i n g i n t h o s e t o 1 0 - pounders' Having fished in almost all of our states and in more than :U) countries abroad (including, especially, those friendly neigh bors that share our continent, Canada and Mexico), I'm inclined to be somewhat outspoken about lures that have produced for me day in and day out, under all sorts of weather conditions, and in hoth fresh and salt water That's one big reason I was so confident the trio of lures mentioned above would work on coho. Each has proved itself on chinook, coho, steelhead and various other sea-run trout and salmon--from the shores and rivers of Oregon and Washington to the tumbling streams of Scotland and Norway. T h e Silver Minnow and Sp rite, in particular, have been tremendously effective on coho, a school fish with an appetite that's second to none. In Lake Michigan, of course, the coho feeds principally on the alewife. Fortunately, this herring- like fish is plentiful and can be credited with the coho's rapid growth. It's pale, almost silvery in color, so lures like the Silver Minnou• and Sprite. combining a can't be-imitated. swimming action with extremely high visibility, can really look for all the world like an alewife to a hungry coho. By the way, all Silver Minnoivs have a weedguard. They need it to dig bass, northerns and other fish out of the weedbeds. But the weedguard will never interfere with a coho strike--and may actually come in handv when you encounter one of those occasional inshore Lake Michigan weedbeds.
