ILLINOIS KDUCATION ASSOCIATION | From The Farm Adviser's Desk | PLAN TILING SYSTEM Planning a complete tile drainage system is the first step in installing tile lines on your farm. If you are installing only a few lines this year, you should also plan for future tiling. Then you can install other tile lines later, and be sure they will work as part of the system. KEEP A TILE MAP An accurate farm map locating tile lines is a valuable document for a landowner. Many tile-drainage contractors furnish these maps as part of their service. METAL ROOF CARE Check your galvanized metal roofs. You can add life ,to metal roofs by painting them with a good metallic-zinc paint as soon as they begin to rust. Painting a galvanized metal roof white is just as effective as aluminum roofing for relecting the sun's rays and keeping the building cool in summer. Steamed bonemeal has 14 to 15 percent phosphorus and,28 to 30 percent calcium. Illinois dairy cattle will get enough of these two minerals to supplement normal diet when about one percent of either of . these minerals are added to the grain mixture and when the cows have free access to either source in a self-feeder box. CHANGES IN SOYBEAN PROGRAM The price support for the 1969 soybean crop will be two dollars and twenty-five cents for number one soybeans. This compares with two dollars and fifty cents a bushel for number two beans for the previous three years. The lower support level will be to reduce the income of soybean growers by, 30 cents a bushel. The 1969 crop may total about 1 billion bushels. The loss of farm income could be near 300 million dollars. Here in Illinois the soybean crop may be around 190 million ljushels. Illinois farmers can expect a loss near 60 million bushels. A farmer who grows 100 acres of soybeans may lose nearly 1 thousand dollars. PRUNE FRUIT TREES Prune fruit trees in the home orchard now. They need annual pruning to keep them productive. Each year remove two to five percent of the bearing wood from dwarf apple trees, five to 10 percent from regular apple trees, 10 to 20 percent from peach trees, fourto eight percent from red tart | cherry trees and six to 10 per- I cent from plums. In early bearing years use the lower figure. For older trees use the larger figure. You can get Circular 971 "Pruning Apple Trees" from the McHenry County Cooperative Extension Service in Woodstock. PLAN BEFORE YOU PLANT With spring just around the corner, late March and early April is a good time to plan your outdoor home beautification program. Don't wait until the spring planting season starts or you may be disappointed. The plant materials you want may be scarce or the professional peo-' pie may be too busy to help, you. You may get a copy of "Landscaping Your Home" from the Cooperative Extension Service, Woodstock, 111. It is written by William R, Nelson, Jr., University of 111-*' inois landscape specialist. Who Owns The Land? In the contiguous 48 states, nearly one-and-one-half-billion acres of land is privately owned. The other one-half-bil* lion acres constitutes "public land," owned by the Federal and State governments. Virtually all of Alaska is federally owned. About 57 percent of Hawaii's land is in private ownership. Dead Trees Not only is a dead tree unsightly when spring comes, but often it is a threat to the health and safety of other trees and to the home itself. The longer a dead tree stands, the more rotten and dangerous it becohies. Numerous insects lay their eggs and live under the dead bark or in the wood of dead trees. As spring approaches, these insects emerge and attack a wide variety of healthy trees. Dead trees should be removed and burned. NOW » Open Monday Evenings UNTIL 9:00 P.M.
