For raspberries and blackberries, apply 2 pounds of 5-10-5 mixed fertilizer, or its equivalent, in other formulations, per 50 feet of hedgerow. Or, apply % cupful per plant in the hill system. For grapes apply % ciq> of 5- 10-5 or its equivalent per plant. TORNADOES Tornadoes may occur at any time, day or night, but most of them hit in the late afternoon and early morning hours. They usually follow a hot humid day filled or threatened with thunderstorms and associated with a cold front or squall line about 100 miles to the west. REPAIR^ LIGHTNING RODS The lightning protection system on your buildings is only as good as the ground rods. Sometimes ground rods look solid, when they have rusted off a few inches below ground level and provide no protection. Replace broken rods with new 5/8 inch rods eight feet long. Use a good clamp to fasten the cable to the rod. CHECK MOISTURE As spring weather arrives, check your stored grain for moisture buildups. The top 4 or 5 inches of grain in bins may need to be raked to break up any crusting caused by excess moisture condensation on the top of the grain bins. If moisture accumulated in the grain during the fall and winter, some grain may be wet or spoiling and serious trouble may result as warm weather arrives. Feed wet grain to livestock. Remove any grain that is in danger of spoiling. SOIL TEMPERATURE GUIDES EARLY CORN GROWERS If you're anxious to start corn planting, University of Illinois agronomists give this advice: Plant according to soil temperature early in the season; later, plant by the calendar. Corn rarely germinates until soil temperatures reach 50 degress F., and germination occurs slowly until soil temperatures go above 55 degrees F. . Whep soil moisture conditions are right for plaii&t^* soil temperatures will rise rapidly -- even to a depth of four inches -- on a clear day. Consequently, the time you measure soil temperature is important. Here are two guides indicating when the agronomists feel that you can safely start corn planting after April 20 - 25 in northern Illinois: -- Plant when the soil temperature at 7 a.m. reaches 50 degrees F. at the two-inch level. Conditions should favor com growth during .most of each day if the sun continues to shine. » Plant wlien the soil tempperature at 1 p.m. reaches 55 degrees F. at the four-inch level. The four-inch measure is not as greatly affected by a single day of sunshine as are temperatures at a two-inch level. Early-planted corn seldom suffers damage from late spring frosts because the young corn plant's growing point remains underground until the plant is 12 to 14 inches tall. Swine Management and Housing University of Illinois studies with pigs weaned at 4 and 5 weeks of age: -- In two trials, the allotment of 2.25 square feet of floor space per pig in a totally slotted-floor nursery resulted in a lower rate of gain *han when each pig was allowed 3 or 3.75 square feet. Hiere was some indication that the performance level in the environment of 2.25 square feet per pig decreased as the number of pigs per pen increased. -- The level of feed intake and the rate of gain during the 35 days following weaning were related to weaning weight. The heavier pigs gained the most rapidly. -- Mixing litters at weaning had less effect on gain and efficiency than did mixing lit-, ters 4 weeks after weaning.' Studies with growing finishiig swine: ITEM: Dry mustard can be - transformed into hot English mustard by simply mixing it with cold water. Allow to stand 10 minutes to develop flavor. LET S LOOK AT THE * & RECORDS J- •« 0 BY LINDA NORRIS ^ OPEN HOUSE An open house featuring a movie from the New York World's Fair entitled "Man's Search for Happiness", will be held^at the Elgin ward, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon), Friday, May 2, from 7 to 9 p.m. The church is located at Parkview and Pleasant in Century Oaks, which is just off Big Timber road in north Elgin. D g 5 p i 16 adverse publicity and some emotional personal problems, there is little doubt that The Beatles are still tops when they get together and play music . . . Their compositions are superb and they have found no equal as far as blending their notes together in a s i n g a b l e , s w i n g a b l e LP . . . Their latest, Yellow Submarine is no different; in fact, it is one of t h e i r b e s t . . . The a l b u m contains selections by The Beatles In addition to original film music from the film. Yellow Submarine composed and orchestrated by George Martin. By The Beatles are such songs as the title song, Only a Northern Song, All Together Now, Hey, Bulldog, It's All Too Much and All You Need I s L o v e . . . By M a r t i n , b u t eloquently done by the famous q u a r t e t t e , a r e s u c h t u n e s as Pepperland, Sea of Time and Sea of Holes, Sea of Monsters, March of the Meanies, Pepperland Laid Waste and Yeliow Submarine in Pepperland . . . For those who saw the movie, the album is a m u s t . . . For those who could skip the Beatles in person, the album is intriguing and good Showmanship . . . Anyway you look at it, The Beatles can't possibly miss with their latest effort. Like opera, especially Wagner? Miss Flagstad ot Norway and Mr. Svanholm of Sweden were reigning Wagneriansin Europe and America during the 30's a n d 4 0 ' s . . . The p r e c i o u s Walkfire and Siegfried duets are among their greatest legacy while the Tristan scene in the album recalls what is perhaps F1 a g s t a d ' s greatest role . . .
