J PG. 5 - PLAINDEALER - WED. APRIL 23 1969 CONGRESSMAN CONDUCTS POLL WITHIN DISTRICT Congressman McClory is polling citizens of the 12th Congressional district (Lake and Me Henry counties, Barring! ri and Hanover townships in Cook county) on key issues facing the 91st Congress. The IBM questionnaire will go to more than 130,000 households, according to the Congressman's estimate. Constituents may record their position on key public issues by punching responses to Questions and mailing the IBM cards to Congressman Mc- Clory's Washington office. The eleven questions covered in this year's poll relate to a) the Vietnam War; b) the proposed ABM defense system; c) Electoral college reform; d) student disorders; and e) other critical issues. Although only one question- ' naire will be mailed to each' household, any voter may rev ceive a questionnaire by a(f dressing his request to tjte Congressman's office as fallows: The Honorable Rotert McClory, 426 Caruion House,Office Building, Washington, >.C. 20515, (or 326 North Geiesee Street, Waukegan, itinois 60085.) In commenting on tie significance of the questionnaire project, Congressman McClory stated: "I am more anxious than ever to receive a generous response to this yaar's questionnaire. While the responsibility for making decisions on critical issues must be mine, the value of this public response cannot be overestimated. I am hoping that most citizens will take the brief time necessary to respond to the 11 questions which cover most of the principal issues facing the United States Congress." Several of the questions in the Congressman's questionnaire are identical with those propounded by other Representatives of the Congress. This will permit comparisons of public attitudes in various sections of the country. It is estimated that about one-third of the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate this year will employ some form of public poll s>t constituents on legislative issues in a manner similar to that adopted by Congressman McClory.
