Grove avenue, Mc Henry, was officially activated into Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority on Monday, May 19. After completing a fourteenweek pledge period, she is now an offical member oif the Beta Kappa chapter at Western Illinois university in Macomb. The annual Founder's Day dinner drew an attendance of forty-nine members of Alpha Theta chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma society, to Martinetti's restaurant, Crystal Lake, recently. Dorothy Ullrich, chapter president, presided at the short business meeting which followed the dinner. A printed summary of Alpha Theta activities for the year, and a review of the proceedings of the Lambda State convention in Peoria, April 18- 20, were given to each member. A solemn candle-lighting ceremony honored the twelve international founders of Delta Kappa Gamma. It called to mind the central mission of this professional society - to unite women educators in a genuine spiritual fellowship. A large triangle of light, formed by candle-bearers, Lillian Bolger, Leta Clark and Janet Vierke, commemorated the twenty-sixth birthday of Alpha Theta chapter, which now numbers sixty-six members representing these Mc Henry county educational systems: Algonquin, Crystal Lake, Harvard, Huntley, Marengo, McHenry and Woodstock. J A serious skit --."Nor Sit, Nor Stand, But Go!" -- based on the original purposes of the organization, and stressing the need to improve the future by choosing wisely the changes to be made in contemporary society, was presented by Marge Adams, Hazel Barrett, Carolyn Bauer, Lillian Bolger, Leta Clark, Helen Jurack and Janet Vierke. Maxine Kempf accompanied the group singing which concluded the program. "Herby" Awards Made To Valley View Teachers A highlight of the Valley View Pro meeting held Thursday, May 22, was presentation of teacher appreciation awards at the first program of this type held at the school. Master of Ceremonies Paul Cooper read the list of nominees in each category and the winning teacher stepped forward to accept a "Herby" award. The business meeting was opened with a pledge, followed by committee reports. The Fun Fair report told of great success in this event and a motion was made to donate $150 toward books for the library. Attendance at this May 10 event was excellent, including children and adults who Wthered for a day of fun. T^ere were games for all, a walk, movie theatre, bake sale and country store with penny candy. There was also food for those who wished to have supper and then continue the games. Among the most popular attractions was the auction, where youngsters joined their parents in bidding for their heart's desire. The little ones, in many cases, did their Mother's day shopping. HOLIDAYS BILL Gov. Richard B. Ogilvie on May 13 signed five bills into law that moved five holidays to Mondays. The bills, designed to create three-day weekends, bring Illinois legal holiday laws into harmony with similar recently passed federal legislation. The five holidays -- Washington's birthday, Lincoln's birthday, Memorial Day, Columbus Day and Veterans Day -- will now each fall on a Monday, for the most part on the Monday of the week the holiday would have fallen normally. To create the three-day weekends, Gov. o^ie signed Senate Bills 42, 13, 44, 45 and 46 amending the negotiable instruments act, the School Code and bills creating individual holidays. PATRICK HELLEY ~ PATRICIA ANN MIKOSZ PLAN WEDDING -- Mr. and Mrs. Casimir Mikosz of 4603 Home avenue, McHenry, announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Patricia Ann, to Patrick Michael Helley. The bride-to-be is a 1968 graduate of Marian Central high school and now is attending McHenry County college. She is presently employed by a local food store. The prospective groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Helley of Fox River Grove. Having received his education in the Cary schools and served as engineer in the U.S. Navy for three and a half years, he is currently attending McHenry County college. He is also employed as a computer operator by a Barrington firm. Hie young couple have chosen Oct. 18 as their wedding date. TWO AWARDED BA DECREES AT DUBUQUE ? Danny George Eagan, son of Mr. and Mrs. George William Eagan of 22 High road, McHenry, and Linda Marie Low, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Low, 4804 Barnard Mill .road, Ringwood, were awarded .the B.A. degree in commencetment exercises of the University of Dubuque Friday, May .23, in McCormifck gymnasium ton the UD campus. Dr. Ferine Nagy, former premier of !Hungary, delivered the commencement address. Candidates for degrees from '..the College of Liberal Arts and the Theological seminary numbered 177, which was the ^largest number in the university's 117 year history. C o m m encement activities began with Baccalaureate service Sunday, May 18. The Rev. Dr. Roland Showalter, pastor of the First Presbyterian church of Libertyville, delivered the Baccalaureate address. STOP RECONSTRUCTION Gov. Richard B. Ogilvie announced last week that he does not favor immediate reconstruction of the Executive Mansion in Springfield. He cited the " difficult and uncertain fiscal situation" of the state as the reason for his stand. The price tag for reconstruction is $1,500,000. In a letter to Rep. Election of officers for the 69-70 year was held before the meeting started and those elected were Carolyn Sima, Senior Regent; Gloria Flannigan, recorder; Marion Vornkal, treasurer; Greta Rother, chaplain; Jeanne McHale, Junior Regent and Ha Hogan, Junior Graduate Regent. After the fourfold, enrollment was held for Rose Schabow and Dolores Taylor, sponsored by Doris Schabow, and Sharon Melahn and Helen Laika, sponsored by Gloria Flannigan. Balloting was held. Card Chairman Florence Tussey gave her report. Recorder Gloria Flannigan read the minutes of the May 6 meeting. Senior Regent' Ila Hogan thanked all the co-workers for the help they had given her this past year, and asked that everyone give her total energy helping the Senior Regent elected, Carolyn Sima. She has set June 14 at 8 p.m. for the installation. All co-workers are asked to bring a dish to pass. The L.O.O.M. will serve as escorts and Carolyn's husband, Past Gov. Carl Sima, will be the installing governor for the installation, sogirlsbesureand have Dad to come to the installation with you. After the dinner, Pm told there will be some swinging music. Pat Knapik received the attendance award, Lillian Cox and Sharon Melahn received the special award, and Barbara Leight received the annual dues award. ' May 24, 1953 McHenry chapter of the W.O.T.M. was instituted with the assistance of the Woodstock chapter, to help celebrate the sixteenth anniversary. Forty-seven co-workers were present for dinner after the meeting. Membership Chairman Margaret Dretler and her committee served refreshments. Next meeting is June 3. Doris Low, Academy of Friendship chairman, and committee will serve refreshments for June. Don't forget the installation June 14 and the pot-luck dish. Try to make the June 3 meeting, please.
