J In Our Time . . . Robert Doran, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Boehm of Kane avenue, McHenry, is a June graduate of Tarkio college, Tarkio, Mo., with a major in literature, journalism and psychology. He has written the following observations as the first of two articles, "In Our Time". There have been many requests by members of both warring generations for a sound explanation of student activities throughout the nation and the world. "What gives our youth cause for rebellion?" They ask. "Why do so many, perhaps a majority, of today's younger generation resort to inhaling marijuana and'droppingacid*:" The answers, in their most comprehendable forms, can be found in our own, progressive, yet socially sterile community, McHenry, Zip Code, 60050. The answers are, nevertheless, long and complicated, forcing a twopart commentary. This week will dral witji the rebellion from wk}iin; .reasons for marijuana and drug addiction. Young people today are users, primarily, of marijuana and various barbiturates (phenobarbital) and the amphetamines (benzadrine and tranquilizers). All are cocaine derivatives which lend themselves to habituation rather than addiction, bringing a psychological dependence, not a physiological one. A recent survey shows that most users suffer from character disorders which result from their lack of ability to cope with everyday situations. To quote James C. Coleman, professor of psychology at the University of California, "Thus we are dealing with maladjusted individuals who gain important satisfaction from the use of narcotics as a means of coping with unpleasant reality." Fr?. June 13, 1969 - Plcrindealer - Sec. 2, Pg. 3 them realize the detrimental effects that this might have on their physical and mental stability. But, to them, it is better than fighting an immoral war in Vietnam or battling emotions with secure adults at home. ) The youth of today view life a bit differently from past generations. To them the world is a place where men should work to enjoy lite, fulfill moral and ethical dreams, and, in the vernacular, "have a groovy time of it." They reject the old lifestyle, with its emphasis on prestige, conformity with the past, and most of all, a false sense of nationalistic pride. To them, adults view the world as a pfece to live in order to work, raise a secure family, and retire on $54.00 a week, i Young people find it impossible to find themselves or form a unified philosophy of life in a world so concerned witn time and the "lack of it". Young people everywhere are searching for a life with new meaning. This life is to display moral truth and ethical perfection. TTiey cannot find it in a world inhabited by men who refuse to listen and act positively. So, they turn to a false world-- the world of dreams. Walt Whitman once said, "If I appear to be out of step it is because I march to the beat of a distant drum." Today, there are thousands of people "out of step" with present society - perhaps they should be. Drive down Green street on any given evening and view the misguided, long-haired freaks of our time. Maladjusted individuals? Yes, but let's look at the reasons. Standing on street corners and sitting on cars, they talk about "things." After fiveminutes, the man in the dark blue suit, with loaded pistol and riot stick at his side, comes to force "their exit with threats of a loitering charge. So, they migrate to the park to sit beneath the trees or stroll in the grass. But, the park closes at 9 p.m., except when t'he city band holds a concert or mom and dad want to play tennis. The young must leave or be prosecuted for milling on public grounds. Where to now? To their homes for some "refreshing" condemnation of their appearances and goals, values and judgements? No, it's into the country where they can inhale "grass" or Cat-Nip, sniff glue or swallow "uppers" or "downers"; anything to escape real1- ity; a reality that centers around parental hypocracy and greed. For years the city of McHenry has organized activities for Itts youth. Clubs, parades, organized baseball, etc.. But it all ends after high school graduation. Now they are left to organize things themselves, so they organize peer groups; some insisting on "turni rigon" with narcotics, while others find something else. Organized crime, perhaps.
