The father, * who is an expert marksman, had ' been instructing his two daugh- " ters in target practice. Martha - took the rifle intending to shoot ;and just as she pulled the trig ger Elaine jumped in front of T;the gun just as it exploded and it struck her. Forty-five miles an hour be came the speed limit on Illinois highway at midnight June 30. . The Rosedale greenhouses were closed on the last day of June and McHenry is now with out a greenhouse of any kind. Frederick Silas Rich, 71, passed away following a stroke June 18 at his farm home at McCullom Lake. Jane and John Kent, children of Mr. and Mrs. M.J. Kent, had their tonsils removed on Monday. Miss Marion Kaelin was hos tess to a party of seventh grade girls at her home which was the first of a series of bun co parties which will be given by the girls. They will be known as the H.B. club and are plan ning some pleasant meetings to be held every two weeks at the homes of the members. About forty-five members of the Grace Lutheran church choir and their friends of Wood stock enjoyed a pleasant eve ning June 25 as guests in the summer home of Dr. and Mrs. L. Brown in this city. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 6, 1944), The inhalator squad was sum moned to the river near the new bridge on Tuesday afterhoon when two boats collided throw ing three occupants into the wa ter. They all were rescued and revived. It has been a happy holiday weekend for most folk? in this community and so it should have been for there was every thing possible to make the four days as pleasant as possible for a wartime holiday. The weather man was most cooperative pro-, viding four perfect days. To the relief of all but the young folks the lack of fireworks was not considered a loss. Except for the beautiful displays on the Legion grounds enjoyed in for mer years, the lack of noise plus the danger of individually used fireworks was most wel come. The Frank Low family moved last week from Chicago to the Paddock house formerly the Bobb studio on Waukegan street. McHenry residents and in particular the congregation of the Lutheran church here ex tend a welcome to the new pas tor who succeeds Rev. Eiss- feldt. The Rev. HermanC. Noll, who on June 25 was installed as pastor of the local Zion Evan gelical Lutheran church, has for the last four years served a{ mission congregation on the south coast of the isle of pines Cuba and also taught the Chris tian Day school which was the only school available to the children of that isolated com munity. Second Lt. Norman E. Blom- gren, 26, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis A. Blomgren, Pistakee Bay, McHenry, was recently awarded the air medal at a B-24 Liberator heavy bombard ment group. The presentation made was "for meritorious achievement in sustained op erational activities against the enemy." \ TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 9, 1959) The city of McHenry accepted a new forty-nine star flag last Saturday, joining the nation as the new banner came officially into existence. Having a better view of Queen Elizabeth on her Chicago visit than anyone else of our acquain tance was Capt. Carl S. Ames of Regner road, Pistakee Bay, adjutant of the Marine barracks at Great Lakes, who was in charge of the Marine honor guard for both her arrival and departure. During the entire procedure, he was within 10 feet of the queen. Siebel Motor Sales, Elm street, McHenry, has been ap pointed factory representatives in this aroa for sales and ser vice of all makes'of new Ram blers. \n open house will be held July 10. Two popular McHenry vocal ists will appear July 15 on the band concert on the high school grounds. They arc Dorothy Hol lander and Walter Kuhns who will sing "Memories" and "Moonlight and Roses". The band concerts under direction of Paul R. Yanda will contin ue through the month of July. New Melleray monastery in Dubuque, Iowa, was the scene of a beautiful wedding cere mony July 6 when Miss^Eileen Knox of McHenry became the bride of Mr. Ronald Mauer al so, of this city. The ceremony was performed by Rt. Rev. Ab bot Philip CConnpr, OCSO. The nuptial high mass was »er\ by Brother Kevin OCSO,1 er of the bride. RUDOPH BIRING Rudolph Biring, 63, passed away Monday, July 7, in Elm- wood Park. He was born in Ger many, city ofBraunshweig, July 24, 1905. At the age of 5 years he came to the United States with his parents, brother and sister in 1912. Mr. Biring is survived by his wife, Eunice, three daughters, Mrs. Donna CBerg, Park Ridge, Mrs. Evelyn Bassler, Woodstock, and Mrs. Nancy Ebert, Elmwood Park, six grandchildren, his brother, Otto Biring, McHenry, a sister, Mrs. Agnes Pratt, Round Lake. The body rests at the Ernest R. Lewis funeral home, 7600 Grand avenue, Elmwood Park, where services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. News About Our Servicemen Stuttgart, Germany, - Army Specialist Five Robert J. Zriny was promoted to his present rank recently in ceremonies "at Company A, Signal Support Group 106. The McHenry specialist is a telephone exchange repairman at Company A. Specialist Zriny graduated from McHenry high school in 1965. He entered the Army in December, 1967, and completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Prior to entering the Army, Specialist Zriny was employ ed in Barrington, as a preci sion machinist. The 21-year- old specialist began his over seas tour of duty with the 106 in September, 1968.
