CARE DIRECTOR IS APPOINTED FOR ILLINOIS CARE, Inc., the private, in­ ternational rehabilitation and aid agency, has announced the appointment of Eugene B. Flan- egan as midwest regional di­ rector. Headquartered in Chi­ cago at 220 S. State street, Flanegan will administer CARE operations in both Illinois and Indiana. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Sept. 5, 1929) More than one hundred rural teachers attended the annual in­ stitute at Woodstock with the county superintendent, Ethel C. Coe, in charge. Among the tea­ chers at the meeting were sev­ eral from McHenry including Miss Mary Bolger, Miss Ar- line Harrison, Miss Carolyn Steffes, Mathias P. Freund, Ruth Powers, Kfthleen Powers, Eleanor Conway and Elsie Vy- cital. William Brennan, 51 years old, died suddenly at his home in this city Sept. 4. He was taken ill with convulsions due to kidney trouble and passed away in a few hours. Mr. Bren­ nan was a cattle buyer. The beautiful home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wieland on Pistakee Bay was the scene of a large house warming when about 300 guests were present and filled the beautiful home and wonderful lawn with a gal­ axy of bright colors and mus­ ic. The guests were all mem­ bers of the Pistakee Yacht club. The palatial home which is sit­ uated on the south end of the bay is one of the most beau­ tiful places on the bay. Lester Bacon and John W. Smith are the members of the McHenry Rifle club who are spending their vacations at Camp Perry. The national rifle matches and a school of in­ struction are in session there and over 3,000 marksmen from all over the world are present. Miss Mary Kinney and her sister, Kathrine, of Mankato, Minn., arrived Thursday to take up their duties as teachers in this vicinity for the year. Mr. E.C. Domm and friend of Niles, Mich., called in the Mrs. B. Frlsby home and J. N. Sayler home Sunday. Mr. Domm is a former instructor in the local high school and will be remembered by many friends and pupils here. Since leaving McHenry he has been teaching at Niles, Mich. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Sept. 7, 1944) Alex Fortis, 67, a resident of the Country club subdivis­ ion died at his home there on Sept. 5, following an illness of a few months. A large shipment of surgical dressing gauze has arrived and work in the surgical dressing rooms at the high school will be resumed Monday, Sept. 11. The assigned quota must be completed by Oct. 15. Sunday, Sept. 3, a meeting for all home owners of Orchard Beach property was held at the home of Dr. Carelli. At this time the Orchard Beach as­ sociation was organized for the purpose of social contact to be­ come better acquainted with one another through future meetings and entertainments and for gen­ eral property improvements. The James Downs family has moved from the Klontz house on Main street to the DeVore place on Waukegan road which they recently purchased. Mr. and Mrs. George Steins- doerfer have five sons serving in the armed forces. Alvin, the eldest of the five sons, en­ tered service on Aug. 30, 1942 and was sent overseas in Ap­ ril of 1943, serving for a year on one of the small islands in the south west Pacific. Leo­ nard entered service six days after his brother, Alvin, and is located in San Francisco, James entered the army on Dec. 28, 1942 and is still in the states but expects to be sent over­ seas in a few weeks. Irwin and his brother, James, left for service the same day. He is now serving in England. Rich­ ard, the youngest of the boys, left for army service on Ap­ ril 20, 1944. He reported at Fort Bliss, Texas, and there was assigned to an anti air­ craft unit. The Ringwood Sunshine Girls 4-H club turned in $175 to the ambulance fund. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Sept. 10, 1959) Mrs. G.P. Steilen, one of the city's oldest residents, ob­ served her ninety-second birth­ day anniversary on Sept. 4. Mrs. Irma Rockstead of Won­ der Lake with many years of hospital nursing to her credit will be the new nurse serving the McHenry schools, working along with Mrs. Pauline Pries who has been with the school system for two years. Attractive signs have been put up at the four entrances of the city. Two are on the north and southsides of Mc­ Henry on Rt. 31, and two on the east and west sides on Rt. 120.
