McHENRY Judge Carroll "Man Of Year" Many McHenry county ?es- idents-almost 200 persons at tended the auspicious banquet altogether-joined the Notre Dame Club of McHenry County members last week to honor Judge William M. Carroll for many years of distinguished service. Occasion was Universal Notre Dame Night, and Judge Carroll was named the Notre Dame club's "Man of the Year" to highlight the evening pro gram at Crystal Lake. Judge Carroll was honored for his outstanding career as a lawyer, state's attorney, leg islator, trial court jiklge and appellate court judge. In his remarks acknowledging plau dits of the large throng, Judge Carroll made some headline news, too, with an offhand an nouncement. After thanking the club mem bers, he said they were honor ing both him and his family, and he added: "I look to the future with enthusiasm. I shall enter on a new term as Circuit Judge in 1970." He announced his in tention to stand for re-election as Circuit Judge, a position he has held since June 1945 and has been thrice re-elected, 1952, 1958 and 1964. Judge Carroll elaborated on the significance of the honor accorded him, observing, "In a real sense this is not a tribute to me personally but a reward exemplifying your trust in me as a judge. I think a judge on the bench becomes im bued with the spirit of the re sponsibility and is dedicated to the job entrusted to him." Joseph Conerty, Jr., recip ient of the award last year, was master of ceremonies. Leo Powers, club president, made the presentation to Judge Car roll. Among featured speakers was Timothy Galvin, member of the Notqe Dame university board of trustees and a mem ber of the Class of 1916. Judge Carroll was in the Notre Dame Class of 1915. Galvin revealed a new law center five stories in height will be built northeast of the main library. This will enable the university to have 600 stu dents in law. University en rollment for the first time this year will exceed8,000students, and the freshman class has 1,670 members! One of the finest tributes accorded Judge Carroll was given by the Rev. Joseph Egan, retired pfstor at St. Mary's. He entertained the audience with timely remarks,, then spoke seriously of his longtime friend. "Judge Carroll," he asserted, "is made of the material that made this country great and the same character that has helped guide this nation through every crisis it has faced." In the business session of the meeting, John Orso, Crystal Lake, was installed as pres ident and John Corrigan, Lake- wood, was installed as vice- president. Meyer of 1210 S.
