SEAT BELTS The use of seat belts or shoulder harnesses can min imize injuries and save lives. Research indicated seat belts could save 14,000 lives a year. The only type of accident in which they are of no value is when the car is crushed. With no protection, the occupants can be thrown from the car and these injuries carry a high mortal ity rate. * The exceptions are among pregnant women where abdom inal restraints have injured the fetus and encouraged miscar riages, and maternal shock. In spite of this adverse report, the ladies are safer wearing seat belts as they can be toss ed about the car's interior. Fractures of the pelvic girdle are common where restraints have prevented these injuries, so buckle up and let's start saving those 14,000 lives.
