Olson, direc tor of the Bureau's regional of fice in Chicago. .The survey is taken annually and sponsored by the U.S. De- partment of Agriculture to mea- The Driver's Seat Readers of the "Driver's Seat" are asking: Q: "What ever happened to Mrs. Johnson's highway beau- tification program? I haven't heard much about it since the Nixons have moved into the White House." R.J., St. Paul, Minn. A: Lady Bird Johnson's high way beautification program, launched as a part of "The Great Society", is still breath ing, but just barely. Accord ing to the best available infor mation, her drive to elimin ate billboards has almost flop ped. Federal Highway Adminis trator F.C. Turner noted that there is only $30 million -- a token amount --in the bud get for beautification. Legis lation to promote removal of billboards has not been very effective. Q: "I've noticed truckers us ing triangular signs when their trucks are disabled. Do these signs show up enough to be useful at night?" Mrs. J.B., Oregon, 111. A: Those little triangles are actually emergency warning de vices which meet or exceed all Department of Transportation requirements. Tests conducted by the Department indicate that, in every instance, the traingu- lar device was recognized as an emergency warning sign at a greater distance than the com mon dot-over-dot reflector. Each side of the 2"x'7" tri angle is covered with red re flective sheeting which bounces headlight beams back to their source. Q: "How much money for maintenance is spent annually on the nation's Interstate High way System?" T.B., Westbury, Conn. A: According to recently re leased figures, it will cost $261 million each year to maintain the national Interstate System. That amounts to $6,400 per mile. During the period 1973 to 1985, the total annual main tenance cost for all U.S. high ways will reach almost $6 bil lion. Q: "Can traffic accidents be eliminated?" H.S., Dallas, Tex as. A: Probably not altogether, but the tot^l number can be re duced. Beti^r\ highway delinea tion, signing and engineering have already made a great in road in reducing accidents on newly-constructed highways.
