"Bill" Ward announced his decision to with­ draw his name from the list of nominations for the Republican primary of March 17, 1970, for the office of McHenry county clerk. His decision was promp­ ted by two factors, namely that Supervisor Ward has worked with County Clerk Vernon Kays for the past five years as a member of the McHenry county board and in view of the fact that "Vernon has decided his health will permit him to remain in the race for another four year term". ART TYRRELL The Democratic organization of McHenry county has selected an experienced police officer for the candidate for sheriff of McHenry county. He is Art Tyrrell, 38 years old, a group leader with the Ill­ inois Crime Investigating com­ mission. Before joining the Crime Commission five years ago, Tyrrell was a Chicago police officer for eight years. He has had experience in all lines of police work, under­ cover work with the Chicago Police department and Crime commission. Tyrrell has re­ ceived several commendations for outstanding police work in the field of Organized Crime. Tyrrell studied criminal law at Wright Junior college, a graduate of the Chicago Police academy. He is also a grad­ uate of the Department of Jus­ tice, Federal Bureau of Nar­ cotics school. He has given lec­ tures on the subject of nar­ cotics and syndicate crime and suDversive organizations. The many friends of Mrs. John McEvoy were shocked and grieved to hear of her sud­ den death at her home in this city Dec. 14. Little Arthur Jackson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ford Jackson, had the misfortune to break his arm. He was visiting at his grandparents* home at Johnsburg, where he fell on the basement stairs, receiving the injury. Mr. and Mrs. Richard B. Walsh of Evanstonarethe happy- parents of a daughter born Dec. 11. She will be called Sally Helen. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 21, 1944) Mr. and Mrs. A1 Wagner and Mrs. Lillian Kelter are recov­ ering nicely from injuries sus­ tained Dec. 10 when Wagner's car was struck by another auto at an intersection in Chicago during a blinding snowstorm. Of interest to friends here will be word of the marriage of Lowell Walkup, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Walkup of Coun­ try club road, Woodstock, Dec. 16, in the chapel of the Presby­ terian church at East Cleveland, Ohio. His bride is the former Miss Katherine Tyrrell of Ben­ ton Harbor, Mich. Lowell has many friends in McHenry, where his mother made her home for many years. McHenry has been unfortun­ ate in receiving word during the , past week that FCA Incor­ porated, a new factory which planned to open here, has aban­ doned its plans. Mrs. Elmer Jensen left the past week for an extended vis­ it with her husband who is stationed at Fort Hueneme, Calif. Mrs. Vera Ford is tak­ ing over Mrs. Jensen's duties at the Alexander Lumber com­ pany during her absence. Miss Mary Kinney enter­ tained members of her neigh­ borhood club at a Christmas party held at the Legion hall last Thursday evening. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 22, 1959) Last Sunday St. Patrick's jun­ ior varsity went up against Barrington's tight zone defense and they played like pros, as they rolled to a 17 to 7 vic­ tory. Pat Wirtz, Jimmy Thennes and Allen Miller led the attack with some beautiful pass plays that set up several good shots. John Gonko of Route 4, Mc­ Henry, retired recently after serving for twenty-six years as a die sinker in International Harvester's Tractor Works in Chicago. Mark Vycital and a class­ mate, Al DuPont, of Honolulu, Hawaii, an exchange student at the college of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minn., are spending two weeks with Mark's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Vycital. LICENSES EXPIRE License plates for vehicles owned by governmental units other than federal, by school districts and certain farm ve­ hicles are calendar year plates, and will expire on Dec. 31, Secretary of State Paul Powell, said this week. Mr. Powell said he was issuing the re­ minder because there appears to be the mistaken impression that these vehicles are now licensed on a fiscal year bas­ is, the same as trucks and other second division vehicles. Cindy Smith Counselor For Career Seminar Cindy Smith, 3612 W. Anne street, McHenry, will serve as counselor for the eleventh an­ nual C hemistry Career seminar sponsored by the C hemical In­ dustries Council-Midwest. The Seminar will take place on Sat­ urday, Jan. 10, at the Pick- Congress hotel, Chicago. Students from Chicago area public, private and parochial schools, have been invited to attend the all-day event, which will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. The seminar will open with orientation sessions covering careers in the chemical indus­ try. Through special films and panel sessions, the basic car­ eer areas in the industry, re­ search, production, marketing and miscellaneous job categor­ ies will be covered. Following the general ori­ entation, counselors from chemical and pharmaceutical companies located in the Chi­ cago area will outline the re­ quirements for a career in chemistry to students in per­ son-to-person interviews. Col­ leges and universities in the area will also be represented by counselors. Over 700 students from Chi­ cago area schools are expected to attend. Over 150 counselors and host-guides will partici­ pate. ^ -- P E R S O N A L S -- Mrs. Evie Karls Murphy of Atlanta, Ga., and daughter, Mrs. Kathleen Kehle of Lake Forest, called on old friends, Mr. and Mrs. George Barbain recently. Mrs. Murphy is well known in McHenry where her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Karls, op­ erated a restaurant for many years on Riverside Drive. Friends will be interested to know that her daughter, Lynn, is a nurse employed in Atlanta. Her son, Larry Murphy, III, is a student in a college in Ath­ ens, Ga., and another daughter, Sally, is married and lives in Atlanta with her husband and two children. New Illinois Guide Gives Local Coverage McHenry is among more than 600 Illinois cities and towns described in the Illinois Guide and Gazetteer jusit published by Rand McNally & Company of Chicago. The origins, charac­ teristics and points of interest are given for most of the com­ munities described in the first comprehensive guide to the state to be published in more than two decades. In addition to the gazetteer section, the 718-page guide­ book also has sections on state history and development and fourteen detailed automobile tours covering all sections of the state. The descriptions of PG.4 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, DEC. 26,1969 communities range from a small section for smaller towns to more than 80 pages on Chi­ cago. It is illustrated with maps and photographs. v Published in cooperation with the Illinois Sesquicentennial commission, the Guide is dis­ tributed through book and de­ partment stores as both a trav­ el guide and reference book for students and Illinois history buffs. First of all, the members carolled throughout Val-Mar project. Following that, presents were exchanged, games played and refreshments served. Next meeting for the club will be J^n. 5, 1970.
