PAGE 6-PLAINDEALER-WED., JANUARY 20, 1971 A LONG THREE SECONDS as Ron Miller (at far left in above photo) puts long shot toward the basket. The ball bounced off the rim and (in photo at right) with a second remaining, Fenner, No. 54, gets the rebound away for a two pointer as he is fouled by Scnnadt, No. 33, of Barrington as the buzzer sounded. Fen ner missed the free throw as the third quar ter ended with the Warriors behind 54-37. PLAINDEALER PHOTOS Wrestlers Downed By Cary Grove, 22-17 Warriors Lose Grip « • Ik On First Place Spot by Bill Blankenhorn The McHenry Warriors found the wars of the hardwood to their disliking last weekend as thev were beaten soundly at North Chicago on Friday 69-48 and then returned to their home battlegrounds on Saturday only to be tromped by the Broncos of Barrington 65-52. In both con tests it was a matter of a Mc Henry team that appeared to be a little flat playing teams that have reached the height of their momentum and are playing the best ball they have played all year. In the North Chicago game on Friday, neither team could get rolling as the Warriors sank only 4 of 18 field goal attempts and the War hawks just 4 of 12 as the home team took a 10- 9 lead. In the second quarter, North Chicago got untracked while the Warriors were strug gling as the Warhawks took a commandingr 37-17 lead at half- time. From that point on it was a matter of trying to play catch up ball against a good ball club, and that's hard to do. And North Chicago, after that slow start in the first quarter, managed to shoot a fantastic 60% from the field on 26 baskets in 43 at tempts. The winners were paced by 6*6"/junior center Jerry Coleman and 6'5" senior for ward Willie Hall as the duo Doured in 28 and 21 points re spectively. Jerry Miller led the Warrior scoring with 10points. The Barrington encounter started out completely opposite from the North Chicago game as both teams were popping the nets. Barrington outscored the Warriors in that first quarter 22-19 and in what looked like was going to be a high scoring game saw both teams cool off considerably after the opening round. It was a fatal second and third quarter that sent the War riors down to their third con ference loss of the year against f an equal number of wins as they managed only nine points in each of the two middle stanzas. The Warriors were only outscored one basket from the field (19 to 18) but were thoroughly beat en at the charity line as the Broncos sank 27 of 38 free throw attempts. Bradley, Sch- madt and Hendrickson led the balanced Bronco attack with 22, 16 and 14 points respectively while Mark'Hoffman paced the Warriors with 12 and Bruce Harbecke added 11 markers. BOX SCORES Warriors - 48, No. Chicago - 69. Cary Grove defeated the wrestling Warriors last week by a score of 22-17. The young Warrior swim- * mers went on a record breaking spree in splitting a pair of dual meets last week. The Warriors lost to Forest View 61-34 but set an amazing five new rec ords. Then the next day Mc Henry came back to whip Lake Geneva 76-19 as they broke two of the previous day's rec ords and tied another school record. Usually a basketball game gives us a little excitement* Watched the Warriors play the Broncos of Barrington Friday night without having our blood pressure move 19 a point. It just wasn't a good game. The Warriors were net sharp and their passing was not the kind that wins games. Seems we have harped on that phase of the game all season. Nor did we see the Barrington boys show the class expected of league leaders. They must be better than we saw. In the third quarter, we turn ed to Ron and Ardele Con way and John and Nancy Mc- Gee to remark that there was much more excitement in the Lawrence Welk Show which we deserted for the game. EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDIT0RJ The game ended on a plea sant note when Annie Cuda came down to sit with us for a good visit. Got to talking about some of the players of the past and learned that Matt Eichenger is now a career man in the U.S. Army--a Captain, no less. TTie Cudas hear from several for mer MCHS athletes each Christmas. Came home and watched one of those darn late movies, a murder mystery. Unlike the basketball game, we had no idea how it was going to turn out. Publisher Larry Lund, the "Man of The Year", has headed for Florida. We suspect he is making reservations for his Sports Editor to cover activ ities in the White Sox training camp. Seldom see Edgar and Rose Landgren except at a wake so was especially pleased to chin with "The Judge" and his wife at the Alex Justen shindig. Strange, but sometimes it takes a wake to meet neighbors and relatives. Should be another way. book without passing it on to you readers: HOW DO I KNOW? By Mrs. Ethel Walters How do I know jny youth has been spent? - Because my get up and go has got UP end went. But in spite of all that I am able to grin When I think of where my get up end go has been. Old age is golden, I have heard it said, But sometimes I wonder as I go to bed - My ears in a drawer, my teeth In a cup, My eyes on the table, until. I get up., . Ere sleep dims my eyes, I say to myself, Is there anything else I should lay on the shelf? But I am happy to say as I close the door, My friends are the same in days of yore. When I was young my slippers were red, I could kick my heels right over my head. When I got older, my slippers were blue, But r could dance the whole night through. Now that I'm olde, my slippers are black, I walk to the corner and puff my way back. So the reason I know that my youth is spent Is my get iq? and go has got up and went. But I really don't mind when I think with a grin, . Of all the places my get up has been. Since I have retired from life's competition, I busy myself with complete repetition. I get up each morning, dust off my wits, Pick up the paper and read the 'obits'. If my name is missing I know I'm not dead. So I eat a good breakfast and go back to bed. Compliments of E.J. Rechlicz Arnold said he thought of us the first thing when he read the above. Wonder why? After picking the Baltimore Colts to win the Super Bowl game, we went through a shaky Sunday afternoon. After John ny Unitas went out with a crack ed rib, we thought it was all over. Come to think about it, Unitas wasn't able to do much when he was in there as quarterback. That Cowboy rush was some thing the Colts couldn't handle. Looked at timeS like neither team deserved to win. They gave that ball away too much. Arnold Rauen gave us the following. Thought it too clever and amusing to put in our scrap RUFFLES FOR SPRING... For Spring 1971, New York designer Ceil Chapman offers ruffles-in tucked black silk or ganza over nude, including the long cuffed sleeves. Stream- ered black satin ribbon moulds the lifted waistline. Forest View And Lake Geneva Defeat MCHS Varsity Swim Team The varsity swimming team was defeated twice last week as Forest View beat them 63-28 and Lake Geneva spilled them 72-23 despite the setting of four new Warrior records in the Lake Geneva meet. Against Forest View the Warrior tank ers could come up with only one first place as Rick Swan- son won his specialty, the 100 yard backstroke, with a time of 1:05.5. In the Lake Geneva meet, the Warriors failed to gain a first place, even though they did set four new McHenry rec ords. WARRIOR RESULTS Forest View vs. McHenry 200 yd.
