Ponca St., Mc­ Henry, has been awarded a Presidential and Valparaiso u- niversity scholarship. He will be enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences. Claypool is a senior in Mc­ Henry Community high school and has served as an officer of the following school organiza­ tions: vice-president and pres­ ident of the German club and member of the Student Council. He received the following hon­ ors: National Honor society, National Merit Commended stu­ dent and Illinois State scholar. Twice Told Tales FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Jan. 15, 1931) Friends and relatives were shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Mrs. Bridget Relihan at her home in this city on Jan. 9. No illness was apparent when she was last seen by her relatives. She was found by her brother in h<er home. The third annual meeting of the McHenry local and Pure Milk association was held in the city hall with election of officers as the main business of the day. E.A. Thomas was again elected president of the association with Mat Blake elected as vice-president, Lester Sherman, secretary and Gerald Carey as treasurer. A few friends surprised Ar­ thur Kennebeck at his home on Riverside drive Thursday eve­ ning in honor of his birthday anniversary. Monday evening a fire was reported in the home of Mrs. James Larkin, south of Mc­ Henry. It started on the roof when sparks from the chimney ignited the shingles and with a strong wind blowing it took some quick and effective work to extinguish the blaze. Herman Steffes and Paul Bre- feld left Wednesday on a motor trip through Florida. They may spend a few months. ' TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Jan. 17, 1946) Tuneful choruses, gay cos­ tumes, drills and dances will be featured when the curtain rises on "Pep Parade," the hil­ arious comedy show that is be­ ing sponsored by the American Legion auxiliary Jan. 18 and 19 at the McHenry high school auditorium for the benefit of rehabilitation of returned vet­ erans. Many compliments have been coming the way of John J. Mc­ Carthy this week. He is the new special police officer pending permanent appointment made . necessary by the resignation of Howard Cairns. Mr. McCar­ thy who served for twenty-five years with the Chicago police de­ partment was retired on pension in August of 1941. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Schaefer have moved from his parents home to the Schaefer place in Johnsburg. On a winter day in 1896 Jan. 22, to be exact, wedding bells were ringing in St. John's church, Johnsburg, for a double nuptial service. The happy couples were Miss Margaret Meyer and William N. Freund and the latter's sister, Miss Christine Freund and Henry J. Thelen. The double ceremony was performed by Rev. Father Mehring. The two couples will be celebrating their golden wed­ ding anniversary with their rel­ atives and friends. The daughter born to the W. Sardocks of Waukegan last week is the fourth generation of the family of Peter F. Miller of this city. Mrs. Sardock is the former Miss Violet Miller. Mrs. Ed Peet and Mrs. John Hogan and daughters, Charlotte and Mary of Ringwood speTit Friday in Chicago and attend­ ed the ice revue. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Jan. 19, 1961) Miss Ruth Ann Schoenholtz of Waukegan road, McHenry, is the recipient of the three year nurse scholarship award given by the Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliary to Post No. 4600. Pre­ sentation was made by Daisy Smith, president of the auxil­ iary. A fire which broke out in a cement building recessed in the ground just west of Rt. 31, two miles south of McHenry, resulted in about $2,200 in dam­ ages. The concrete enclosure was used as a storage building to keep crates and skids for the truck farm operated by A.J. Krecker on Rt. 31. St. James Pro-Cathedral in Rockford was the scene of a pretty winter wedding Jan. 14 when Miss Sharon Lynn Hum­ mel became the bride of Mr. Albert Schaefer of McHenry. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Knox spent a few days last week in Springfield where they attend­ ed the inauguration ceremonies and also the inaugural ball. C.R. "Chuck" Peterson of McHenry has earned member­ ship in the I960 Presidents club, the top honor organization for the salesmen of Banker's Life company, DesMoines, Iowa. He won this recognition for ranking among the 119 lead­ ing salesmen of the entire field force in personal production of new business during the quali­ fying period for the club. GOP Caucus Scheduled At School Feb. 2 The McHenry Township Re­ publican club caucus will be held Tuesday, Feb. 2, at 8 p.m. at the East campus school au­ ditorium. There will be nom­ inations and voting for the of­ fices of township supervisor and township road commissioner. Five judges of election will be appointed by the McHenry Township Republican Central committee. The McHenry Township Re­ publican Central committee man will be moderator and two assistants to conduct caucus will be appointed by the Cen­ tral committee. The caucus will be open to all Republican voters who have vo­ ted in the last Republican pri­ mary, held on March 17; 1970, who sign an affidavit that they voted in that primary.
