PAGE 15- Wonder Lake ^Vlary Jean Huff 653-9167 §°9* Band Wins Excellent Rating At Jaxx Festival The Harrison school stage band made its first appearance at the Chicagoland jazz festi val on Feb. 6 and walked away with an excellent rating. Out of fourteen groups in the junior high division, three were giv en superior ratings, eight ex cellent and three good. The stage band, also known as the Psychic Sixteen, and their director, Richard Mikus, de serve a large round of ap plause for a job well done. ;^%mong the upcoming band e- vents will be a band solo and ensemble contest at Prospect Heights on Feb. 27. There will jfce forty-nine entrants from Harrison school, including thir ty-three soloists and sixteen ensembles, almost double the number entered in last year's contest. On March 7 at 2:30 mm., the varsity band, choir l|i)d stage band will present a pre-contest concert at the School. The choir contest will take place on Saturday, March 13, at Avon, followed by the varsity band contest on March 27 at Gages Lake. BROTHER DIES Our condolences to Ruth Oes- terlund and Mrs. Howard (Mil dred) Hill. Their brother, Gus- tave W. Oesterlund, died Mon day, Feb. 15, in Myrtle Beach, S.C. LENTEN DISCUSSIONS Father Ron Conro will be the discussion leader at the lenten discussion groups now being or ganized at Christ the King church. Group No. 1 will meet starting Feb. 25 on Thursday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.; Group No. 2 meets Fri day night - 8:30 to 10 p.m., 'starting Feb. 26; Group No. 3 on Tuesday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 2-.15 p.m., starting March 2; and Group No. 4 on Tuesday night - 8:30 to 10 p.m. starting March 2. WIN BAKING CONTEST The winners of the recent fa ther and son Cub Scout baking contest were Ted Dass and son, Keith. This is the second year in a row that the Dass men have won this event. FIRST AID LESSONS The men of the Wonder Lake Volunteer fire department are giving up more of their time to insure the safety of our resi dents. Every Monday night they, meet at the fire house for first aid lessons sponsored by the Red Cross. New Year's Day 1971 t^ok on a very special meaning for Mrs. Bobbie Mirowski,daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Muss Han sen, when her husband, Greg, walked in on her unexpectedly - home from his tour of duty in Vietnam. Following a 30 day furlough in this area, the young couple are now stationed in Fort Meade, Maryland. Greg expects to be discharged sometime in September. BIBLE CHURCH ACTIVITIES Among the many activities of the Wonder Lake Bible church is choosing a missionary of the month. The people of the church are asked to write to him and in this way are kept in close contact with those missionar ies the church helps tosiqsport. The February missionary is of special interest to the Wonder Lake people, as he is Rev. Kenneth Pope, who lived in Ringwood as a boy and at tended the Wonder Lake Bible church. Rev. Pope now lives in Sitka, Alaska, with his wife and two children, where he is a radio minister and has or ganized children's bible class- ' es along with his other duties. About twenty-five to thirty members of the Bible church at tended the recent LIFE Insti tute in McHenry. In the morn ing and evening sessions they learned ways in which to help Christians share their faith with others. Then they put their learnings into practice by going out in teams to assigned ter ritories for door-to-door wit nessing. ] Wednesday! evening services at the Bible church include a mid-week /prayer service at 7:30 which offers prayer groups for every member of the fam ily, followed by senior choir practice at 8:30. Thursdays the teen-agers meet for Bible study time at 7:30 p.m. at the Dan Swetman home in McHenry. On Friday evenings the Pals Club and the Pioneer Girls meet at the church at 7 p.m. APRIL IN PARIS April in Paris will be a real ity for Miss Joyce Young, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Har old Young, Wooded Shores. Hav ing left Wonder Lake New Year's Day for France, Joyce is now studying at the Univer sity of Rennes, and plans to spend the summer working in Paris. She lives with a French family and writes home that the Midi is very much "in" with the French people and that A- merican students and for eigners are easily recognized by the length of their dress and their hair. After returning to Wonder Lake in August, Joyce will continue her education at Beloit college. JOINS MARINES Pat McMahon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence McMahon of St. Francis Heights, left Wed nesday, Feb. 17, for duty with the Marines at Camp Pendle ton, Calif. Pat was guest of hon or at a party in his home Sat urday, Feb. 13, when friends and family gathered to wish him well in his new venture. VISITS OLD FRIENDS Mrs. Mabel Sartwell of Lit tle York, 111., spent several days in February as a guest in the William Nielsen home in Wooded Shores. Mrs. Sartwell and her husband, who died re cently, were residents of Won der Center for many years. While she was here, Mrs. Sart well enjoyed visiting with some old friends. REV. VANDERPOOL RETURNS FOR FUNERAL Rev. James Vanderpool, for mer pastor of Christ the King church, returned to Wonder Lake recently to say the fu neral Mass of Elmer Raske who died Jan. 30. Father Vanderpool is now a resident of Washing ton, D.C. Streets and Roads: Trustee Hatch read the resolution for maintenance of streets and highways by municipality under the Illinois Highway Code ap propriating $2,500 of Motor phone call to her daughter, Mrs. Mary Ahrens of Woodstock, she reported that she was not hurt by the recent California earth quake, but her first thoughts as it awakened her were that it was the end of the world. For tunately, though things had fal len all over the house, there was no damage. Also, after hearing of our 10 below zero weather here, she said she'd stay in California unless things got worse. Mrs. Jay Hansen of Wonder Lake, another daughter of Mrs. Lowrey, tells us her mother is healthier since mov ing to California than she has been in years and that al though she likes living there very much, she misses all the action back here. Mrs. Lowrey is planning a trip to Illinois in March when her daughter, Lor raine, will celebrate her sil ver jubilee as a Sister of Mercy. The Harrison Band Parents association meeting which was originally set for Feb. 25, has been cancelled. CHEESE CAKE 1 graham cracker crumb crust, browned 2 8oz. packages cream cheese 2 eggs 2/3 c. sugar 1 t. vanilla Cream cheese until smooth. Blend in eggs, sugar, and va nilla. Pour into crust and bake for twenty minutes at 375 de grees. Take from oven and let stand for fifteen minutes. Topping: 1 c. sour cream 2 T. sugar. 1 t. vanilla Combine the above ingredi ents.
