Ron Miller lead the Warriors with 12, followed by Jerry Miller with 10. PLAINDEALER PHOTO EARL WALSH A Hear SPORTS EDITORJ both teams give it all they have it is worth watching. The chorus has started ear ly with such questions as: "How are your White Sox going to do this year?" When we told Bob Justen, "They are coming back", his smart reply was, "Yeah, back to Chicac Some of those minor league players being brought up to the big time will have to be for real if our Sox can show any thing. We hope they knew what they were doing when they traded Aparicio and Berry. The ans wer has been heard before from teams down under -- "We couldn't win with them, so--" should be about right. Instead of "What this coun try needs is a good 5-cent cigar" some people are going to be moaning, "Whatthis coun try needs is a good 5-cent pack of gum." Mr. Wrigley an nounced a boost in price. See what those Cub salaries are doing to you? The North Chicago Warhawks have to rate some kind of a crown. They beat Libertyville Friday night, then came heVe Saturday night to beat our War riors. Basketball fans are* some thing different and "always have been. We sat near one loyal North Chicago fan who blamed the officiating all through the game when his team trailed. In his book his team didn't commit any fouls -- McHenry players didn't have half enough ca^ed on them, according to that fellow. Suppose that enjoy a game, is the way to but no thanks. All this when the conference race was so tight that you couldn't see daylight between the top teams. We note that Walter Will iams, nicknamed "No Neck," will not be overlooked. Think he batted .304 in '69, then didn't figure in the team's plans for '70. After losing to both Barring- ton and North Chicago the past weekend, Coach Ludwig will have to get the team in tune to take on Crystal Lake here Fri day night. Warriors Eliminated From Title Picture by Bill Blankenhorn The McHenry Warriors saw all hopes for a possible con ference championship elude them last week-end as they dropped a pair of heart-break ing decisions to Barrington (47- 44) and North Chicago (51-44). The double-header defeats put the Warriors two games off the pace with the final game of the regular season coming up Friday night. The Barrington contest saw both teams employing a delib erate control offense and an ag gressive defense. Neither team ever led by more than Ave points, and the lead was tied or changed hands 23 times dur ing the game. The five point spread was attained only once as the Broncos pulled to a 13-8 lead at the end of the first quar ter. The Warriors held Bar rington to a single field goal in the second period to take a 24-22 advantage at the half. Dale Hendrickson scored seven points in the third per iod to help the Broncos to a 37- 33 lead, but the fourth quarter was the heart-breaker for the Warriors. Both teams played such tremendous defense that the first three minutes of the final period saw only one field goal scored. Then Ron Miller tallied a lay-in and a free throw to elevate the Warriors back into a 42-39 advantage with four minutes remaining. The Bron cos then tallied four straight points to take a 43-42 lead but Jerry Miller calmly sank two free throws with 2:02 re maining to put McHenry back up 44-43. Don Heyse scored his only field goal of the night 20 seconds later and the War riors, trailing 45-44 control led the ball for a good shot. With 16 seconds left Ron Mil ler took a good 12 foot shot Irom the top of the key but the ball rolled in and out and; Barrington grabbed the re-| bound. McHenry immediately'* fouled but Heine ma nn sank both free throws and that was the ball game. Jerry Miller led the offen sive attack with 15 points while Ron Miller added 14 tallies. The Warriors shot only 31 per cent from the field while Bar rington shot just 33 per cent. NORTH CHICAGO GAME The North Chicago contest was much closer than the score would indicate. The final margin of victory was the largest point spread the Warhawks enjoyed the entire game. Actually, it was the Warriors that enjoyed the lead most of the night. After an 8-8 first quarter tie, the Warriors jumped to a 25-20 halftime lead. McHenry never relinquished the advan tage throughout the third per iod although the Warhawks nar rowed the gap to a single point at the end of the quarter at 39-38. But once again it was a dismal fourth quarter that spelled defeat for the orange and black. The offense netted just five points during the final eight minutes while the defense, which had performed exception ally well, suffered a minor lapse as the Warriors could not shut- off big Willie Hall. It was another poor shooting effort by the Warriors that was the big difference in the game as they took 12 more shots than North Chicago but connected on one less in an 19 for 56 per formance for 32 per cent. And their effort at the charity strijJe wasn't much better as they connected on only 8 of 17 for 47 per cent. But the defense once again deserves a lot of credit. Len Gehrke held the Warhawks Jerry Coleman, who is averaging 25 points per game in league play, to just eight points. And the aggressive zone press, which is becoming a Warrior trademark, forced the Warhawks into numerous turn overs and kept them off bal ance for most of the night. But the defense, as good as it was, could not contain Hall as he scored 26 points and blocked a number of Warrior shots. The Warrior offense was led by guards Jerry Miller with 12 and Ron Miller with 10 points. SK KEENEYE'S TIPS ON SHOOTING The woods aren't filled with .304 hitters. We are sure the Sox will come back to Chicago. Where they will go in the standings is still a guess. McHenry plays the winner of the district tourney and that winner is very apt to be Mar ian Central. That's a match many would like to see. Let's say we have a .500 club this year and a pennant winner two years hence. That We started to write about the North Chicago game, but can best sum it up by saying the winners had too much height and too many long arms.
