If f~c I AT WHITE HOUSE -- Jack Schaffer of Cary, Illinois Young Re publican state chairman and McHenry county auditor; and Mike Brown of McHenry, McHenry County Young Republican chairman, were among the Young GOP leaders who gathered from all over the nation and were honored at a White House reception last week in Washington. President Nixon addressed the group, praising them for their work on behalf of the Republican party and the country. He also discussed the progress made by his administration in solving the problems facing the country that are of particular interest to young people. The reception was part of a three-day leadership training school that both Brown and Schaffer attended, sponsored by the national Young Repub lican organization. SHOT & SHUTTER PHOTO McHenry Jaycees Work On Ex-Offender Program About 150 Jaycees from throughout the state Saturday heard Peter B. Bensinger, di rector of the Illinois Depart ment of Corrections, praise the Illinois Jaycees' newly-inaug- urated Employment Program for Ex-Offenders. The direc tor's endorsement of the pro ject came during an employ ment seminar sponsored joint ly by the Joliet and Joliet East Jaycee chapters at the Joliet Holiday Inn Saturday and Sun day. The Joliet East Jaycee unit is the first penal chapter to be chartered in the Illinois prison system. Promising his "complete co operation and support", Direc tor Bensinger joined a growing number of organizations in pledging their endorsement of the unique program. These in clude the Illinois State Cham ber of Commerce, Illinois Law Enforcement commission, John Howard association and a num ber of other prominent agencies and organizations throughout the state. The seminar brought together Jaycee volunteers from McHen ry and some fifty other com munities. The volunteers areto serve as "career coordin ators" in efforts aimed at find ing meaningful employment for prison inmates prior to their release. Representing the Mc Henry Area Jaycees was Char les Heinmiller, state director, who issued this statement: "I came away from the seminar fully convinced that here is a challenge to excite the imagin ation. For perhaps the first time in Illinois penal history we were able to meet and talk with men from behind prison walls, men who were permitted to come out and tell us their needs. Saturday's seminar session also included addresses by Warden John J. Twomey, of the giant Joliet-Statevillepris on complex; James L. (Jack) Trimble, inmate Joliet East Jaycee who heads the state wide employment project; Don ald F. Stalbaum, project co- chairman of the Joliet chapter; Robert Kennedy, inmate presi dent of the Joliet East group; Fraser "Fritz" Young, state Jaycee director and regis tration executive for the sem inar; David Blumenthal, inmate co-chairman from Joliet East; Robert Oldham, one of the or ganizers of the penal chapter and Joliet Jaycee officer; and Robert Solomon, former inmate and now community relations representative of the John How ard association. Gene Gnidovek, president of the Joliet chapter, welcomed the Jaycee coordina tors. 'Inmates James Puyear, Mi chael Morton and Paul N. Tim- reck -- three of the first six penitentiary inmates to be al lowed to venture from behind walls to attend a session of this kind -- expressed their ap preciation to Director Bensin ger and Warden Twomey for their "enlightened attitude in giving us this opportunity. We are grateful, too, to the Mc Henry Area Jaycees who have pledged their labors in help ing us in this unique under taking. Without them, our task might well be hopeless." According to Robert Stur geon, president of the McHenry Area Jaycees, "The local chap ter has been aware of the need for local assistance, for those individuals who will return to our community after they have been released or parolled. Our chapter has established a co ordinator to investigate the op portunities available for em ployment, housing, etc. We . ̂ -- Man's True Nature To Be Explored At Local Church Rite Man's true nature will be ex plored at McHenry • Christian Science services Sunday. Scriptural selections in the Lesson-Sermon on "Man" in clude this verse from the first chapter of Genesis: "God creat ed man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them." A citation to be read frojn Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy states: "Jesus taught but one God, one Spirit, who makes man in the image and likeness of Him self, - of Spirit, not of mat ter. Man reflects infinite Truth, Life, and Love. The nature of man, thus understood, includes all that is implied by the terms 'image' and 'likeness' as used in Scripture." An invitation is extended to all by Christian Science society to attend services at Lincoln road and Eastwood lane, begin ning at 10:30 a.m. Here & There In BUSINESS Illinois Bell Looks Ahead At 1971 Construction President Charles L. Brown, although expressing "a feeling of cautious optimism at Illinois Bell" because of the inflation problem, said the company's 1971 construction expenditures will be in about the same amount as those of 1970, which totaled $389.1 million. Mr. Brown's statement is in the company's annual report, released this past week. "Though long-term economic predictions are difficult at best, we have not changed our ear lier estimate -- we expect to invest $2 billion in this first half of the decade to meet de mand for more and better ser vice," he said. He noted these principal i- tems of 1970 company opera tions: The company gained 195,000 telephones, including 82,000 residence extension phones, a "respectable growth," but 25 per cent below the 1969 record and 7.2 per cent below the company's average telephone growth for the past five years.
