We promise to be nice to you -- for a day or so at least. Seeing all the gals doing the family wash in the laundromats makes us think back to the days before dryers. Our mother used to hang the clothes outside no matter how cold the weather. Sometimes we helped "take down the wash." Can just see that long underwear, stiff as a board, hanging from the line. It took a lot of doing to pry it loose when it was frozen to the rope or wire. Frozen hot pants on the clothesline wouldn't be much trouble, but those long drawers were something else. You couldn't fold 'em. Johnny Callison, Cub right fielder, says he wants to play every day. Wanna bet he won't be playing for somebody else before this season is over? BASEBALL * * * BY PETE FRITCHIE Lakeland, Fla. -- The Detroit Tigers training camp is more exciting this year than at any time since 1968--the year the Bengals won the flag and the World Series. Mayo Smith, the manager that year and in 1969 and 1970, was the quiet, un exciting type. The suspicion around the American League in 1967 was that Mayo should have won the pennant handily, but he lost out on the last day to Boston. In 1968 the players--charged with blowing it in 1967--took things in their own hands and won the flag by ten games. Then they pulled out the World Series after being down 1-3 to the St. Louis Cardinals. Since then they haven't gen erated much steam, and the team has been racked with dis- sension-though Mayo contin ued to use a very light hand. Denny McLain is perhaps part ly a result of his light touch. One can't imagine such be havior under a manager like Billy Martin. And that's one reason Billy Martin is holding court at Lake land today. He thinks the Tigers have a good chance at the flag. The trade which brought the left half of the infield from Washington, plus two pitchers, one very good and the other possibly so, for Denny, might have put Detroit in the pennant scrap. If Detroit also comes up with Bill Zepp, a promising Melton Decorating, Larry Vi- tek; Mets, Jim Christy; Lions, Tony Alfieri; Joe's$ave More, Ron Cornwall; Carpet Dis count, Wally Stanchuk; Braves, Bill Holmes. Minnesota pitcher who wants to be traded to Detroit, Tiger pitching would be even better. Baltimore has strengthened its hurling, New York already has good pitching, and Boston might have a fine staff also. Thus the race in the eastern division might hinge on these four staffs.
