"To The Public: "There exists on the books of the Illinois Department of Conservation, a law which grants a fishing license to any veteran who has a service connected disability, which the VA has rated as service con nected, for a fee of 50 cents. "However, upon in vestigation as a number of licensing agencies and village offices, I find that they are ignorant of this law, and have no information or forms for said license. The only forms that they have available are the standard licenses for resident non-resident and those 65 years of age and older. "Why has this law been kept a secret from the veterans of this state? God only knows, that the veterans of Illinois have very few benefits as is, "I have asked the Con servation department to advise me as to why this situation exists, and what steps can and will be taken to correct same and make these licenses available to the qualified vets of this state. Dr. Herman is a shrewd ob server of human nature so study this case with double care. And don't let any "vested in terests," whether in education,' medicine or industry, stifle your own "horse sense." Though we medics prescribe a dozen ocean minerals, a former Food and Drug head said there is NOTHING in the sea of any medical value! By - George W. Crane, Ph. D., M.D. CASE K-554: Herman B., aged 38, is a chiropractor. "Dr. Crane," he began, "I enjoy your column because you don't mince words. "And I refer not just to marriage or sex problems, but to many of the sacred cows in medicine and psychology. "But don't a lot of people resent new ideas if they seem to threaten their job security?" NEWSPAPERS STIMULATE IDEAS For five years I served as research scientist with the National Research council and the Carnegie institution of Washington, D.C., so I have been well trained in the scientific method. Thus, I approve of Thomas Jefferson's idea that people should be urged to handle their own problems instead of always waiting for Uncle Sam's handouts. For example, free public education by state colleges and high schools is threatening to bankrupt our Republic. Suppose we made them self- supporting, at least after the sixth grade! This idea is terribly shocking to entrenched, second-rate educators. Why? They are afraid of a com petitive system lest they be forced to produce better teaching. And college profs are scared of losing their "tenure." Even our medical colleges are hounding Uncle Sam for handouts for new schools, yet we have one M.D. right now for every 650 people in the U.S.A. And that is twice as many as are really needed if laymen would use more "horse sense" and quit being such "Worry Warts" over minor ailments! Hospitals, too, are trying to stampede taxpayers for big new additions, when half the present hospital beds are oc cupied by hypochondriacs who should be at home! Their grandparents would be ashamed of these "chicken" descendants! Although I am an M.D., and a member of the A.M.A., I don't share its desire to monopolize medical treatment. For Dr. Benjamin Rush, great pioneer medic and signer of our famour Declaration of Independence, said no single profession or group of men should be allowed a monopoly of the art of healing! As a result, I have addressed state and national conventions of physicians, dental surgeons, chiropractors, osteopaths, podiatrists and optometrists, for all these groups have distinct merit. - But some medical colleagues of mine once argued with me in Chicago saying nobody but the M.D. should be allowed to deal with illness. "Laymen have no business meddling with drugs or treatment," said an officer of our Chicago Medical society. So I punctured his delusion by curtly reminding him that an old herb woman in England gave us our greatest heart medicine, namely, digitalis. And I told him that our first use of aspirin came from the tea of willow bark, about 400 B.C. Also, poisoned darts of South American Indians were tipped with curare, and aid in our sceNE Using the McHenry Service Center Payton Chevrolet SERVICE CENTER No appointments for emergency service on any make car.
