KACjt 4-PLAINL)tALtK-FRIDAY, JUNE 18, 1971 MARK TWO EVENTS -- St. Paul's Episcopal church was the scene of two important events last Sunday. One was the silver wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Nowell, and the other marked the first time lay readers were allowed to ad minister the chalice. Shown in front are Danny Heldt, son of the lay reader, and Christopher Nowell, son of the honored coi^le, both of whom acted as crucifers. Behind them are Mrs. Mary Zelsman, mother of Mrs. Nowell; Mr. and Mrs. Peter Nowell, Father McKay, pastor, and Eugene Nowell, a son, who served as acolyte. In rear center are Richard Nowell, a son, as acolyte, and Peter Nowell, Jr., a son, as usher. In rear, left to right, are Robert Hess and Daniel Heldt, lay readers. POETS CORNER SUBURBIA When first we went suburban I thought my life sublime- but little did I realize rural luxuries mark time. Like when we bought the second car that Mama had to have, and oh that cabin cruiser was surely meant for Dad. Not to mention private clubs that raise the status quo, or cocktail parties for the "Ins" society you know. Well, you can have your garden walks- petunias in a row- Pm sick of broken fingernails, and sick of shoveling snow. Just give me back the trolley car a chugging down the line- no more buying gasoline, or fancy cars on time. And give me back a landlord who fixes things for me, while I relax in comfort beside my old T.V. Suburbia you tricked us with your rainbow painted hue. How many more will find you out before your ruse is through? By La Von B. Dowhin A GIFT OF LOVE The little girl with puzzled look... counted the pennies in her pocketbook. She knew it wasn't too far away... she'd waited so long for "Father's Day". In the store she wondered why... she couldn't decide just what to buy. She went back home and thought and thought about all the things she hadn't bought. Another day passed, she still didn't know... now she counted her pennies all in a row. Then at last she knew what she'd do... she'd make Daddy's gift in an hour or two. She took her pennies, her crayons and paste... then a big piece of paper and really made haste. She pasted the pennies to spell out each word... that all the world's Daddies remember they've heard. The present was ready... now she waited her turn. As Dad opened his gifts... she smiled with concern. Then he opened the best gift that he'd ever had... For there with her pennies she spelled... For Reservations Phone 815-678-7766 Homemakers despise roaches. They're not only a nuisance but a source of em barrassment. In addition, they devour almost anything. Their characteristic "roachy odor" spoils food and taints dishes. They stain painted surfaces, papers and books, and roaches may even damage fabrics on rare occasions. Steve Moore, University of Illinois and State Natural History Survey Extension entomologist, says that the German roach is the most common species of cockroach in Illinois. Roaches may live in groceries, restaurants, dairies, hotels, apartments and .homes. The German roach "frequents kitchens, pantries and bathrooms in homes because food and water are readily accessible in these areas. A small, tan insect about one- half to one-inch long when full grown, the adult German cockroach has two, dark, parallel stripes on the back between the head and wings. The young, or nymphs, have no wings and are dark brown with a light-colored band running the full length along the middle of the back. The nymph stage is the one most frequently seen. German roaches move into homes from nearby buildings during the summer. They gain access primarily in soft-drink cartons, luggage, cases, boxes, furniture and other materials brought into the home from infested areas. In apartment buildings they often enter in dividual units along water and gas pipes. Look for roaches after dark, using a flashlight. During the day, you can usually bring them into the open by probing their hiding places with a piece of wire or a thin strip of wood. Misting 0.1 percent pyrethrin in will be a steak fry and swim party, a learn-to-dance session to brush up on the new dances, a coffee and conversation, a "creature feature" party with pizza and popcorn at a mem ber's home and a family trip to Adventure Land. To be eligible for mem bership in Parents Without Partners, one must be a parent with one or more living children, and be single by reason of death, divorce or separation. Custody is not a factor. The Lake Area chapter meets the second and the fourth Friday of every month. For further information, write P.O. Box 165, Crystal Lake, 111. oil from a pressurized spray can into their hiding places will also bring out roaches. Those hit with the spray will probably die. Cleanliness in homes infested with roaches will keep populations at a low level. However, good gousrkeeping alone is insufficient to prevent or eliminate roaches. A ready-to-use, 0.5 percent diazinon or baygon, oil-base spray effectively controls German roaches. Moore points out that most German roaches are resistant to the commonly used chlordane and dieldrin insecticides. The success of your control program depends largely on the placement of the in secticide. Locate the hiding places and any known path ways of roaches, and apply the chemicals to these areas. Common pathways include baseboards and areas where counters and walls join. Also treat places where pipes pass through the floor into the basement, such as in the kit chen and bathroom. Always read the pesticide's label and follow all precautions. And store pesticides safely out of reach of small children, Moore con cludes. accident), McHenry; Kathryn Pittman, Wonder Lake. No gift of nature has been more lavishly bestowed upon us than water. At least two- thirds of our bodies are com posed of water. It's the largest constituent of every cell, and there are billions of them. The hard bone cells are one- third water. Cells in all ani mal bodies must be perpetually bathed in fluid to perform their functions. Food must be dissolved in liquid during the process of digestion. It must then be carried in a fluid state to all parts of the body to supply its nourishment. Large amounts of liquid are constantly flushing out the poisons through the urinary system. Water is also leaving the body through the bowels, the lungs and the skin. On a c o l d d a y y o u c a n s e e y o u r breath as vapor as it con denses on windows as water. Plenty of water inside and out is necessary to health, HEALTH BEAUTY cleanliness, and comfort. On arising in the morning, it is an excellent plan to drink a glass or two of water. It helps the emunctories of the body to begin carrying out the poisons through the kidneys and the bowels. Too little fluid in the body is often the cause of sluggish feelings, headaches, and var ious diseases. Everything that has life must have water. Animals go out and seek it, but plants cannot. Yet they conserve it in many ingenious and wonderful ways. When traveling or camping, unless you are positive that the water supply is pure, dor V not drink it until it has been boiled or treated. It may be dangerous regardless of how clear and sparkling it appears. When the children go to camps this summer, warn them against drinking any water that is not guaranteed by the camp authorities.
