The "Green Machine" rolls on 15-7 Thursday evening, the Hester Oil Owls rolled on to their 6th triumph in 7 games, defeating the Hawks to strengthen their hold on first place in the majors. The green and white clad Owls, McHenry's answer to the "Big Red machine", counted 15 tallies bringing their 7 game total runs scored to 97! Again it was Jeff Damiani and Scott Feund who led the Owl attack. Damiani had his second consecutive perfect 4 for 4 game. Preund also had a perfect day to raise his season's average to an astonishing .720. The Owls batted around in both the third and fourth innings. Their ten run explosion in the fourth put the game out of reach for the Hawks. Ken l)urkin smacked two hits in that inning to drive in four runs. One of the finest fielding plays of the little league season was made in the second inning by Ron Pepping as he made a diving, finger tip catch of a fly ball in right field, and con verted it into a double play. Bobby Low pitched all the way, striking out 10 to earn the victory. Dick Long and Russ Weingart shared the pitching chores for the Hawks. Mike O'Halleran led the Hawk at tack, accounting for two of their five hits. r h e Hawks 01051- 7 5 3 Owls 1 0 4 9(10)x - 15 11 2 Residential-Commercial • Blacktopping • Sealing • Repairs Free Estimates 1-338-4739 JACKSON ASPHALT-PAVING CONTROLLING MARIJUANA Marijuana control measures should be aimed at killing the plants before seed production. Spraying in early June provides a simple, low-cost, and effective means of control. Spray the marijuana plants with 2, 4-D. If new plants grow - repeat the spraying. Marijuana grows in fence rows, ditch banks and waste areas. PRUNE PINES Prune your pines in June if you want compact, shapely trees. You can cut the new growth to any desired length and the pine will form new buds at the end of each cut Gall 815-338-3737 for Circular 1033 - "Pruning Evergreens & Deciduous Trees And Shrubs," or stop in at the Cooperative Extension office in Woodstock and get a copy. UNWELCOME VISITORS Roaches are unwelcome visitors in any kitchen, V bathroom, storeroom, or any place in your home. You can rten their visit by treating ways and hiding places with percent diazinon or 0.5 rcent Baygon. Be sure to fead the directions on the label before using any pesticide. American, oriental, German and brown-banded are the most common cockroach species. Suggestions for control of cockroaches and other household pests are given in Circular 900," Insect Control By The Homeowner," available at your county Extension office - located on Route 47 and Mc- Connell road, Woodstock. You may phone 815-338-3737 and we will send you a copy. BLACK CUTWORMS Cornfields should be carefully examined now for cut or missing plants - signs that cutworms are at work. Damage has been observed on hillsides as well as low, wet areas in fields. If many cut worms are less than an inch long and are cutting off corn plants, you can use a pellet-like bait for 5- percent carbaryl (SEVIN) on apple pomace, applied broadcast at 20 pounds per acre with ground equipment, or from the air. Do not cover by cultivation. PAGB7-PLAIND.EALERJR«DAVJ\JUNE 18, 1971 Environmental Courses Scheduled During June McHENRY] YOUTH LEAGUE The McHenry Youth League opened its season Sunday with some encouraging words from Earl Walsh and Fred Meyer, two dedicated men, always there when you need them and very interested in helping today's youth. The first game of the day matched the Braves against the Mets. The Braves came out on top of the 7-0 score thanks to the tremendous pitching turned in by Bob Staley, who allowed only two hits. This young ball player had a no-hit game going into the last inning when it was spoiled by a hit by Marty Zeller over the third baseman and Brian Bauer lined one to right center. It was a thrilling way to start a season. The weatherman cooperated beautifully until 2'/2 innings into the second game when a large cloud settled over McHenry and put an end to a perfect day at the ball park. Monday's night game saw the Cards emerge victorious over the Mets 2-0. Card's Kevin Worm's 3 hit pitching and Dave Wickenkamp's homerun made the difference in this tight, well played game by both teams. Marty Zeller did a fine job on the mound for his Met's team. The workshop was centered around the following subject matter areas: animal wastes, pesticides, insecti cides, fungicides, fertilizers and conservation of natural re sources. Both the state workshop and the area courses that Barrett participated in are part of a state-wide project, which is partially funded through the Ill inois Division of Vocational and Technical Education.
