PMtAMOUNT HCTUKS PRtSiNIS Alio (tarring m EARL WALSH THE McHENRY VARSITY basketball-football cheerleaders attended camp June 13 through 18 at Illinois State University. Out of five nights of judging, they received a total of five ribbons. On the final day of camp they put in all the spirit that they had and managed to capture a spirit stick to take home to their school. This was the biggest thrill in the stay at camp. On Friday, after a long and tiring week at camp, the cheer leaders loaded into cars. They brought home with them all of the new and exciting experiences in which they came in contact with staying at camp. Left to right , they are: Mary Beth Williams, Caroline Mierzwa, Jayne McMillan, Amy Leighty, Peg O'Halleran, and Kolleen Carroll. McHeniy's Team Ties American Legion Crystal Lake, 1-1 Me Henry's American Legion team battled Crystal Lake to a nine inning 1-1 tie Monday, June 21, on the strong pitch ing of Greg Freund and the clutch hitting of Ted Pitzen and Roger Ludwig. Freund pitched nine innings, allowed only five hits and two walks and struck out sev en. The only run off him was unearned and scored in the first inning on a walk and a three-base error on a fly ball to center. McHenry tied the score in the seventh when, with two outs, Pitzen doubled and scored on Ludwig* s clutch single to center. The game will be continued at a later date. McHenry's next games are Friday, June 25 when Harvard plays at McHenry (6 p.m.) and Sunday, June 27 when Cary visits McHenry (1 p.m.) Any boy interested in play ing American Legion baseball should contact Paul Morenz; 385-0688. , W O O D S T O C K 3 3 8 0 0 3 2 S T A R T S F R I U - A Friday Two Shows 7 - 9 Sat. & Sun. On Thursday night it was the Braves vs. Tigers with Ray Buss pitching his team to an other victory. Ray pitched ex cellent ball giving up only 3 hits in the 14-2 ball game. Kurt Rosing of the Tigers did a commendable job on the mound. Friday night matched the Cubs and Cards with the final score in favor of the Cards 8-3 behind the 2 hit pitching of Russ Grover. Saturday afternoon the Sox and Tigers met to make up a rain out game and the Tigers came up victors of this contest 8-4. Tiger Jerry Biederer chalked up a home run and Ken Ludwig went the distance on the hill. "Honorable mention" to Paul Rogers of the Sox who caught a fine game for his team. The first game of the day Sunday found the Tigers and Mets battling it out. The Mets led until the Tigers unloaded in the 5th inning. It was the - tightest score game thus far with the Tigers on top of the 7-6 final. Buddy Plug and Rick Bradley homered for the Tigers. "Hats off" to Marty Zeller who really did his best, hitting two home runs each with 2 men on accounting for all the Met's runs. The second game of the day saw Bob Staley pitch the Brave team to a 6-0 victory over the Sox giving up only 3 hits in the process. Ray Buss cer tainly deserves special men tion for the exceptional job he did behind the plate. "Never quit" must be his motto. The last game of the day had the Giants emerge victorious over the Cubs 12-5. Bob "Box" Dobbertin nailed a grand slam to help give his Giants team their first win. The Cards and Tigers met on Monday night. Russ Grover*s home run in the 1st with 2 A fellow named Jim Wilson of Waterloo, Iowa gave us a copy of the following. Thought it worth passing on to our read- ers; TEN COMMANDMENTS OF HUMAN RELATIONS !. SPEAK TO PEOPLE. There is nothing as nice as a cheerful word of greeting. 2. SMILE AT PEOPLE. It takes 72 muscles to frown and only 14 to smile. 3. CALL PEOPLE BY NAME. The sweetest music to many ears, is the sound of one's own name. 4. BE FREINDLY AND HELPFUL. If you would have friends, be friendly. 5. BE CORDIAL. Speak and act as though everything you do is a genuine pleasure. 6. HAVE A GENUINE INTER EST IN PEOPLE. 7. BE GENEROUS WITH PRAISE, cautious with crit icism. 8. BE CONSIDERATE of the feelings of others. There are three sides to a controversy, yours, the other side, and the right one. 9. BE THOUGHFUL of the opinion of others. 10. BE ALERT TO GIVE SERVICE. What counts most in life is what we do for others. BUT ITS MORE IMPORTANT TO BE NICE! Almost stopped when we got down to No. 3 "Call People By Name/' Day by day we get worse. Sometimes look straight at a felloW we know and can't think of his name. Tried the trick of going through the al phabet, but that let us down when most needed. Maybe a memory course is in order. Les Bacon tore down an old barn on his lot at the corner of Main and Third Streets and found a board with the names Miles Bacon and Earl Walsh clear as crystal. That dates back a ways down the pike. (Sept. 21, 1912). Miles was a brother of Les ter I^s father and a pal of ours. He died at a young age and it seemed to us at our tender age that the world was coming to an end. Now, aren't those White Sox some kind of sluggers? Don't answer, you Cub downgraders! We'll answer it ourself. Up at Minnesota - 18 runs (in one game). Back to Chi cago - 11 runs, then 12 runs. The way they are going they probably won't lose another game all year. (If they do, please don't call us. We'll call you). Listening to all that dairy promotion will make us feel ashamed to drink anything but milk for a long time. Beverly Dimon, ending her term, looked great and conduct ed herself in a fine manner. She was every inch a queen. Introduced ourself to a fel low sitting next to us. Said he, "You don't look like a far mer". There wasn't enough time to tell him about our pony days. He probably wouldn't have believed us anyhow. Shook a paw with Clint Mar tin. Looks like he will live to be a hundred. Like the birds Clint knows enough to head for the south in wintertime.
